Improving clutch pedal feel (2003 coupe D17a2)
Improving clutch pedal feel (2003 coupe D17a2)
For how competent the other inputs on the car are, the clutch on my car just does not spark joy. The pedal feels rather heavy, kinda squeaky, bites super high, and has a very cammy engagement. I know the squeaks can be fixed with grease, and the pedal can be adjusted, but I doubt that turning some screws is going to reduce that "compound bow" feeling that makes it so difficult to be smooth on the clutch.
I'm guessing the weird take-up is coming from where the slave cylinder pushes against the release fork, but I'd rather ask than go ripping stuff apart for no reason.
So would a different length push-rod on the slave cylinder make a difference?
Maybe a slave cylinder with a shorter stroke?
Or perhaps my parts are worn out and some oem replacements and an adjustment would fix the problem?

is the clutch assembly stock?
does it just have a bad clutch master cylinder? (some cause creak noises or if it feels completely wrong it may be a broken internal spring) Find honda tsb 02-002 for more details.

I believe the clutch assembly is stock, the car has seen a long life before me but the only mod was a trailer hitch. The pedal feel hasn't really changed in the time I've had it. There is a little bit of creakiness in the pedal but all the squeaking was coming from the slave/release-fork contact point.

how many miles since last clutch?
I would say refresh components before starting to think to finding custom parts
or drive a similar car

I was told the clutch was replaced shortly before I bought it so I'm guessing around 15-20k miles. I've been careful about not slipping the clutch too much and not keeping the pedal depressed for long periods, although I haven't been the best about driveline shock. I wouldn't be surprised if the release fork, pushrod, slave, and master cylinders are all original though (190k)

So you have no clue what was installed nor how long it's actually been in there.
Plus it has a hitch.
If someone installed a clutch (pressure plate) that's stronger than stock the required pedal effort will generally also increase.
i. e., Your "compound bow" description, to a "T".
I wouldn't either. For some of the squeak, put a dab of heavy grease between the pushrod tip and the throwout fork.
