2004 civic hybrid does move when in gear and clutch released.

Hello, I’d like to state This is my first manual car and I don’t know much about them or troubleshooting them so with that said

I have a 2004 Honda Civic hybrid with a 5 speed manual transmission. 235k miles

car ran and drove amazing till I loaned it to a friend who isn’t the best with manuals and it ended up getting towed back home.

the car starts up and when I put it into gear it doesn’t move, no weird noises or etc

is it safe to assume the clutch is bad? Or is it possible the clutch slave went bad??

would like to try to figure out what’s wrong and attempt to repair it since it’s a 3rd car for me and with the stay at home order I ain’t got much else to do right now.

i did try and search the forums and google but I’ll be honest idk what I’m looking for any insight would be great

I would guess the clutch. If the slave went bad it would likely prevent the clutch from releasing. So if you tried to shift into gear it would grind and the car would want to move even with the clutch pedal depressed.

-Check clutch fluid level.
-Find the slave (front of transmission, big rubber boot). Get a helper to push the clutch pedal while you watch the slave. Slave piston should extend when clutch is pushed and retract when released.
-Maybe verify the transmission is actually going into gear? Have someone move the shifter around and see if the selector on top of the transmission is moving appropriately.

Re: 2004 civic hybrid does move when in gear and clutch released.

A clutch can be ruined in a matter of seconds when abused. Many people can drive a car with a manual transmission. Not all know how to do it well. Some didn't have opportunity to learn good habits and why they are important.
At work we see many elderly female customers with manual trans cars. These are the drivers that usually make a clutch last a lifetime LOL

Anyway, narrow the options down to whether or not youll have to pull the trans out so you can find out what happened..

Have you noticed the car has an odd, horrible, acrid odor?
Does the clutch pedal feel slightly different?
Shifter still feels normal, has resistance and feels notchy?
Axle cups, inboard, check: Neither are spinning when in gear? (broken cv or axle)
Neither inboard cup has popped outward? (drive splines not engaged)

Re: 2004 civic hybrid does move when in gear and clutch released.

Thank you both for the tips.

so today I had the wife shifted into each gear and it appears the linkage is working correctly you can see it move when shifted.

slave fluid is full,

I didn’t have time to jack it up and check the axles I’ll do that next weekend when I get back home.

i had my wife smell around under the hood to see if she smelt any burnt smells but she said she didnt( I don’t have a sense of smell due to a accident years ago)

clutch pedal feels exactly the same it has for the last 3 years a little free play at the top and then slight Resistance as your depress the pedal, same with the gear shift it feels normal as well.

so I’ll check the axles and the slave cylinder but it sounds like like the clutch is bad.

ill report back once I get the axles and slave cylinder checked but just curious what brand of clutch is suggest? For a 90hp daily drive lol just a Honda brand one or ?

I used an excedy "OEM" replacement kit in my gold 05, zero complaints, it was like $150 cdn for clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing. The OEM Honda parts are obscenely expensive in comparison ($269 for the clutch and $300 for the pressure plate)
