overheat and loss of coolant

just bought the car, guy said it went through some coolant. well, it will dump a gallon out on teh way to work. not sure where its going. the car looses all its coolant on the way to work (about 12 minutes). the system pressurizes enough to blow the hose off the over fill. when at idle the temp comes down but that could just be less steam in teh system....

the old radiator cap was bad, so replacing that stopped the boiling. i was going to do the thermostat next. not sure about head gasket or water pump. at this point idk how to even tell what is or isnt working with how much coolant its going through

Re: overheat and loss of coolant

Probably a head gasket. Read here to learn how to test it.

Re: overheat and loss of coolant

kits do not detect headgasket in these engines.
the link posted have a video showing how to do the test that detects leaks in headgaskets in these cars.

Head should be checked at a machine shop.

Re: overheat and loss of coolant

I have never had one that didn't need milled.

Specs are in the service manual which can be downloaded for free.
