How can I diagnose a bouncing Speedometer?
How can I diagnose a bouncing Speedometer?
2004 Honda manual DX, Speedometer constantly bounces 5-15mph off from actual speed when driving. I started it up this morning and it would idle around 20mph just in neutral. Bought a new Vehicle manual Speed Sensor and it fixed the issue for a couple days and then started acting up again and the speedometer continues to bounce around. I briefly looked at the wiring harness to look for any damage to wiring (couldnt find anything off hand). I'm not sure if there are any potential fuses I could diagnose.
Any ideas on what I can check to diagnose and try and repair? Thanks guys

Paid 25$ for it. It looked identical to the one I replaced. I guess it might be worth buying another one to confirm if by chance I got a bad replacement.

Definitely fake, I see it listed for $200 cad at the dealer. Go to the junkyard if you don't want to buy a new one from the dealer. These cars don't like aftermarket/fake sensors

wow, your right. I guess that leads me to the question of whether the Automatic and manual Vss is different? Junkyard near me has an automatic.
Re: How can I diagnose a bouncing Speedometer?
Well, ended up finding a vss from a junkyard. They told me it was tested and good, OEM part for my manual. Unfortunately, I ended up with the same result. Rides around 20mph even when I'm in idle. Rev it up in neutral and it goes anywhere from 40-80mph. Did a voltage and continuity test on the vss cable wires and all the readings seemed good. Checked the fuse box under the dash, fuses had continuity.
Ran a test on the cluster, did a reset, everything worked so I have no idea where to go from here.
So knowing my luck, I might have gotten another bad VSS but this one didn't even last a minute. As if I didn't change anything.

At the VSS:
-Black/yellow wire should have battery voltage with key on.
-Black wire should have continuity with ground.
-White/green wire is the signal. If you can get the transmission to spin you should see 5V pulses dependent on the speed.
This could also be a failed cluster.

What were the readings?

White/green signal wire had around 5volts with power on (engine off though)
black/yellow wire has 12volts with power on (engine off)
I'm starting to lean on it being a bad cluster as well, I'll take it out and see if there is any noticeable damage.
I'm going back to the junkyard to possibly buy one but now my concern is whether I can swap an automatic cluster into my manual because thats always the majority i find at junkyards.
