I have started working with a family member to fix their Civic 2003 LX 1.7L
It started having oil leaks about 3 years ago.
So we decided to start fixing it ourselves since taking it to a shop seemed too expensive and we wanted to start learning to fix the car ourselves.
So, we changed the Valve cover gasket and we were about to change the oil pan gasket. However upon further inspection we found more leaks in the oil pump and decided to change all the seals in the area.
That took us to removing the oil pump. and we found out that years ago when the dealership changed the crankshaft seal, they pried the seal incorrectly and left marks all over the area. And to cover it, they just put silycone all over.
I need some advice on: If it is necessary to change the oil pump due to those marks (i read somewhere that if the marks where deeper inside the area where the seal sits, that would produce an oil leak), I am also worried that if I just put another seal, those marks will damage the seal as it goes into position, creating another leak.
Also, If you could shed some light on the options of brands for replacing the oil pump that would be great (since I already asked at the dealerships and the oil pump is over 1k dollars, in Mexican pesos), If there are any recommended brands.
Here are some pictures of what I am talking about.
A new seal might work. It's difficult to tell how bad the scratches are. You could do something similar though, new seal with a light coat of RTV to help.
RockAuto has a few options for oil pumps, the most expensive being just over $100.
