Terrible Grinding Noise

Hello everyone, first time poster here. My 2001 Honda Civic started making a terrible noise when letting off the gas the other day. It is what i would describe as a grinding type of noise. I have made a video showing the noise which can be seen in the link here:

I took it to the dealership and they told me it was the alternator. Which i found hard to believe so i removed both belts and started it up and the noise is still there. The video was shot in this condition.

It makes the noise while in neutral as well as while in gear (standard). The noise does seem to go away while the clutch pedal is depressed and the car moving. Perhaps the throw bearing in the clutch? Along with this issue, it has recently started really burning oil or puffing blue smoke. It does have a more recent code of the catalytic converter being bad, so maybe the noise has to do with that.

Anyways, i am hoping someone has had a similar noise. I have searched a lot of threads and couldn't find quite what it could be.

Any help is appreciated!

Thank you.

Re: Terrible Grinding Noise

Could be the input shaft bearing in the transmission. That would be consistent with your description that the noise goes away upon depressing the clutch. A throwout bearing would be the opposite - noisy upon depressing the clutch and no noise when off the clutch. Here is another thread with a video on the input shaft bearing sound - https://www.civicforums.com/forums/3...+shaft+bearing

Here is generic DIY manual transmission noise thread - https://www.civicforums.com/forums/1...save-some.html

We changed the input shaft bearing in our 05 LX SE a couple of years back. It sounded different from your video - the worst was in first and second gear at low speeds. We could still hear it at idle and the noise would completely stop when the clutch was depressed. It was not audible when moving at higher speeds.

Good news is the bearing is only ~$25. Bad news is all of the labor to change it: drop the transmission, open it up, change out the bearing, and reassemble. I worked on it a few hours each night over five weeks. Replaced many things along the way since things were apart anyway - new input shaft bearing, throwout bearing, clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, rear main seal, axle seals, an engine mount, new clutch fluid, and some miscellaneous suspension parts. Spent $400-500 in total on parts.

The smoke is probably a separate issue - bad rings? bad PCV? Sending that much oil out the exhaust could mess with the sensors and cat.
