Growling Sound at Low RPMs [solved]
Growling Sound at Low RPMs [solved]
Hi whatsup
My 2003 civic has been having a couple of issues that may or may not be correlated with eachother.
Firstly, at anywhere from 1.5-2 rpms, there is this very strange sound that sounds like a growl or something loose in the engine compartment somewhere. Sounds like it’s coming from center of engine bay, but I can’t verify. No transmission trouble, oil is fine. Checked kinda frivolously for loose parts, but nada
Secondly, I’ve been having blue corrosion on my positive battery terminal. NEW battery and I cleaned the clamp and post thoroughly. Still coming back.
Is the altnernator bearing going out or something? Explains the sounds and battery overcharging, right? I don’t know. Haven’t had time to dig in there to check the bearing. Both occured around the same time. Going to be cussing a lot since there’s no space and its buried under the power steering pump.
thoughts?

re: Growling Sound at Low RPMs [solved]
does it make the sound when the car is parked with engine running? If parked, not transmission (clutch could still be suspected).
causes can go from from something common to something coming loose and contacting a rotating piece.

Definitely check the alternator regarding the sound and the corrosion at the battery. Common issue on these cars are loose bolts on the alternator bracket causing voltage issues and could fry your PCM.

Yes, it will continue the sound in park or neutral

I just got the altnernator tested at napa and auto zone saying the same thing. Altnernator is good they say, but I will check for loose bolts.

So I made sure all bolts on my alternator are snug. they were tight. also found out i had a tiny oil pan leak while i was looking around. yay.
My civic is due for a timing belt change. its at 96,000 miles. I had my wife accelerate it to make the sound and to my assumption it seems like the sound is coming right next to the serpentine belt.. which is right next to the timing cover. kinda sounds like someone pressing the trigger on a battery powered chainsaw. does a worn timing belt even make a sound like that?

Currently tackling the timing belt. Started it today but I need that special wrench to remove the crankshaft bearing. Only got into the timing cover, but can’t do anything with that bearing in the way. I will be in touch with you guys if it continues making this noise.
re: Growling Sound at Low RPMs [solved]
Hi just wanted to say that I successfully installed my timing belt and that the growling sound is no longer there. Messed up the first time on the belt though. I was one tooth off on alignment I think, but I went in there and fixed it. Thanks everyone.
