Might as well change it all [closed by OP with no change in rings]
Seeking opinions…
A few of you know what I been doing with my 2003 EX. In a few weeks I’m pulling the head to do the requisite head gasket job.
While I’m in there, is there anything i should replace “since I’m in there”? Any other internal engine stuff that is notorious to fail on these 1.7? Rockers, valves, rings (please no)? It has 141k on it, and it’s new to me. No oil burning, decent power (not awesome). Getting new all the top gaskets and a new denso evap sensor due to codes when I bought it that have since stopped.
I’m getting the valve seals and will of course check for burnt valves, lap and gap them, get the head tanked and surfaced yes yes all that jazz. Has a new crank sensor, and the old cam sensor which throws no codes.
anything else besides mani gaskets and such? Or “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”? I’m not gonna race it, but it will be a daily driver for my kid to get to school and back 15 miles each way.

no burning is good - these engines tend to have collapsed oil rings that will let oil through.
check how much carbon deposits on pistons.
have ngk plugs ready

If you didn’t see my other posts on this job, I did not replace everything. It’s tempting to just overhaul the whole engine for sure. But time and money is my guiding principle.
This engine got the full gasket kit, head rebuild, homemade valve job, water pump and all belts, and a handful of DENSO sensors. Seems ti have been enough.
