So I recently purchased a 2001 Honda Civic DX 2 door 5 speed off of offer up for $2,000. The person I purchased the vehicle thru stated the car had just had the Head gasket replaced, the timing was just done as well as the water pump was also replaced. He then proceeded to tell me the car had basically just sat in his front yard for 2 weeks after all that work, with him driving it to and from work a few times in that two weeks, because he originally purchased the vehicle for his daughter but she didn't want to learn how to drive a stick. Fast forward another week or so I purchase vehicle. I do test drive at his house, car fires right up, drives very nicely around the block a couple times at sellers house, transmission clutch everything feels good. I proceed to purchase the car for like I said 2 grand. Leave n have to hit a gas station upon leaving dude's house where I check fluids n see oil is low. I purchase 2 quarts put them into engine and level reads good. For next 15-20 hours I proceeded to do a fairly decent amount of continuos driving with maybe 4-6 hours set aside for while I slept. Fast forward to about 15 hours after I purchase, with 0 noticeable issues mechanically still at this point, I am driving down I-5, freeway, going about 62-63 mph,start coming up on traffic so I decided to drop gears, get around few slow drivers,and proceed along my merry way. So as I went to down shift, rookie ****ing mistake and missed 4th gear somehow(****ing embarrassing still can't believe I did this) and hit second instead, car lurched and obviously revs real high so INSTANTLY I know wtf I just did, so quick as I can engage clutch jump back up to fourth then right back into 5th(obviously my passing window was gone at this point) and continue cruising along. Right away I'm noticing that I am dropping speed gradually and losing all accelerating power. Car still running but won't gain speed or anything. So I think no biggie downshift to fourth to gain some acceleration back(making SURE I hit fourth this time) and nothing. Still no accelerating power and still continuously dropping speed. Try third same thing. Now im a little worried so I Coast off freeway and as I'm coming off exit soon as I hit about 20 mph or so car just died. Was lucky enough to roll thru light and able to pull off road at a good location. Engine was smoking,not overheating tho,but definitely visible smoke from multiple spots it seemed and was also drastically dumping oil out the bottom somewhere of the engine. Tried about 10 min later to start it cranked n turned but wouldn't fire. Towed vehicle home from there. Fast forward 24 hours later I replace all 4 spark plugs, refill oil watching for leaks,none, try to fire up, car starts perfectly!!!no hesitation nothing just fired right up. So naturally I'm thinking awesome dodged a major issue there!!! Let it run for about 5 min just idling with 0 issues and then put it into gear and start driving out my driveway. Soon as I fully turned out my driveway an started accelerating this awful metal on metal grinding starts. It sounded like it was my clutch or something grinding but wasn't positive. Instantly I drop to neutral doesn't stop but gets not as intense drop back into first grinding intensifies..I instantly pull into the visitor parking at my complex by the mailboxes by my entrance and soon as I pull into spot grinding is so loud and intense and then engine just dies so quickly and went silent. Waited a min or two tried to turn it over nothing but click. Click. Click. Not even an attempt to turn over. Fearing the worst seized engine I get pissed let vehicle sit for 10-12 hours. Come back to it figure try and hand crank to verify seized or not. Jack up car, and get underneath to spin crankshaft, and notice oil just DUMPING OUT insanely quick right where engine block/transmission conjoin together. Proceed to use breaker bar on crankshaft and find out can rotate engine about halfway,maybe a little less in both directions, but then it locks up. So I lower car put more oil in rotate crankshaft counterclockwise(so that way when try to fire it will have the room to spin proper direction) and decide I'ma try and fire it up. This time it gives a little whine as the starter begins to attempt to catch and the compression start to happen but then loud thud and then nothing. Back to just clicks. Everytime now if I hand rotate crankshaft opposite way as far as possible then try and turn it over same thing, light whine of it beginning process to fire then thud like it spins into a solid mass stopping the rotating of the engine, and then locks back up and only clicks until I hand rotate again. WHY IS IT LOCKING HALFWAY?? WHAT IS CAUSING THE ENGINE TO STOP SPINNING EVERY FREAKING TIME? did person **** up timing when they did it? Is the engine toast from my ONE mishap of missing fourth on my downshift? I tried everything in my knowledge of engines to diagnose even went as far as pulling the head and checking for a bent rod or piston or whatever but to be completely honest I am a thorobred YouTube mechanic and all tho I have become very comfortable and pretty well educated with my mechanical abilities they are only still so limited and really once I get into the internally workings of an engine I'm completely outside my element and don't have a clue to what I'm looking for to even know if there is a problem in there. Please ANYBODY help I am pretty financially strapped so the option of just taking it to a shop having it fixed or just swapping the engine for me not really a feasible outcome unfortunately and will basically have to do any repairs myself if it is still within the operating ability of repair or if it is to far gone and gonna have to replace it. Thanks in advance to anyone who actually read thru that and sorry for the novel just want all the info so I can get as accurate a diagnoses as possible from someone. Thanks again y'all.

Sounds like it may have dropped a valve. Easiest confirmation is a compression test, or to remove the valve cover and inspect for any valves sticking up a bit.

Do you have documentation proving that any of the prior work was performed?

you need to remove engine and disassemble to check or drop a new one in
or check if the timing belt is out of sync (most likely the belt skipped teeth and valves met the piston, french kiss)
moved thread from Gen 7th to mechanical issues/engine section.

rotating engine in these conditions will only make things worse.

No I don't have any the documentation unfortunately all I have is the head does in fact look like it is brand new as is way cleaner than the rest of the engine and the gasket I can tell is new. As for the water pump and timing that I just had to go off of what the previous owner claimed was done.. so it sounds like no matter what only way to know for sure is to pull engine and more than likely just going to have to replace with new/rebuilt engine anyways?

How can I check it it jumped timing? Is that something I can check without pulling entire engine out? I have a xenon timing light gun if that will help me, don't know how to use it but can figure it out lol

most likely. Thinking about, you can't even check timing belt timing with engine seized.

these engines are interference - valves will hit the piston.

before dropping a new used engine, recommended work:
  • head gasket
  • timing belt
  • rear main seal
  • clean PCV valve
  • if EGR, clean it
  • check if harmonic balancer is not on its way out

You blew the engine with the money shift. Either you put a rod through the block, snapped a valve, or broke the timing belt.
Get another engine, do the head gasket and timing belt and drop it in the car.

Yeah sounds like the rod tried to exit the block. There would be a big hole will oil pouring out of it. By shifting into 2nd instead of 4th you over revved the engine. I wouldn’t be surprised if valves were bent also.
