is drill the only option - air filter bolt stripped
Hi,
A few years back, the dealer changed the oil and stripped the air filter bolt. They refused to fix it, and I end up not change filter for a few years now.
In the picture, the left side is the good bolt, the right side is the stripped off bolt.
is drill the only option to remove it. and what type of drill I should buy? Thank you! stripped air filter bolt
Re: is drill the only option - air filter bolt stripped
That, and I'd be willing to bet you snap the plastic before getting the remnants of that bolt out. That plastic gets super brittle over time. I'm pretty sure I had 2 or 3 of them snapped before I swapped it with a short ram intake.
It's not a huge issue, and it shouldn't be holding anything down with how it's snapped. Also a non-issue if it's only one, especially considering it's on a side and not a corner.
in my opinion, extracting that bolt would be more hassle than it's worth

If you undo all the other bolts I would think that the cover might come off. Or you might be able to rotate the filter housing around the broken stud to change the filter.
unfortunately all the ones in the junkyard will be in similar condition.
I would swap to one of those shiny chrome intake tubes all the cool kids put on their civics.

I have one or two that are stripped or broken too. I have lubed/anti-seized the remaining bolts so they will hopefully not break. I figure most of them are in place and will hold the cover on and not leak too much air.

Thank you! I hope the bore in the cover has no thread.
on different note. if the cap is not 100% seal, it only impact performance, not safety, right?

It's not a huge deal, tbh. Air would be "leaking" into the system upstream of the filter, and less restricted than air entering the intake system through the resonator box. If anything, since it's "unrestricted" airflow inward, it'd be a performance increase. However, it would be a negligible amount of air entering the system through any leaks. No observable safety or performance impacts.

honestly?
my cx-5 had a broken air filter box that let air in and triggered a check engine light. Right before the emission tests.
I was not in the mood to change the whole air box
i used duct tape to hold that corner and it have been there since October.
remove the remaining screws and if you wish, remove the broken screw.
or remove the remaining screws, change the filter and simply seal that corner until you can change the whole box.

Good point, I don't think the top half would be threaded. So remove all the other bolts and you should be able to spin it off (spin it to loosen the rust). In fact, if you got the cover off wouldn't the rest of the stud be sticking up then? If so, just spray it with penetrating oil and use a vise grips to spin it out.
For what it's worth, I have had a missing air filter bolt for 40k miles since I bought the car. I have not experienced any codes or performance issues related to this.
