Maximum warpage on a 2004 civic ex 1.7 vetec engine block
Hi, I am new to this forum. I'm doing a head gasket replacement on my 2004 civic ex 1.7 vetec. I noticed the engine block is warped, it looks like the biggest gap in 0.004. I've read where the maximum gap allowed is 0.004, does this sound about right, or is my block history. Before I read about the specs I started to sand the block with some 220 grit sandpaper to be followed up with some 320 and maybe some 400 grit. Now I'm thinking I need another block. I had planned to use a Nippon leakless head gasket. Appreciate any opinions. Thanks, Mike

I assume the 0.004 service limit has been reached and the block can't be used, am I correct in that, just want to be sure. I'll probably go ahead and buy a new block. Thanks for your reply.

A machine shop should be able to re-deck the block making it perfectly flat again. No need to replace it. Usually they can take off ~0.010 in before causing issues with compression and timing.

That's good to know. My problem is I don't have the place or time to pull the engine. What do you think if I sand the block down myself and get it as close as I can, like 0.001 or 0.015. I saw on YouTube where some people have success with doing it themselves. Do you have an opinion on that, thanks.

The dissimilar metal between cylinder liner (hardened steel) and aluminum everything else makes trying to do this DIY very difficult to achieve the tolerances needed.

I see what you mean. I would probably end up running the block. I'll just wait until I can pull the engine and do it right. Thanks for your help.
