Camshaft won't turn, broke timing belt
Camshaft won't turn, broke timing belt
My timing belt went on my Honda Civic 2001 LX.
I was going down a hill, maybe at 45mph when it happened. Cranked it over a bunch trying to diagnose it. Realized my timing belt was snapped
I took things apart, and was gonna do a compression test etc. but couldnt get the camshaft to rotate at all. The crank turns just fine.
I took the head off today
I bend at least two intake valves.
My question is.... could the bent valves be whats stopping the camshaft to turn.... or is it likely I effed up the camshaft too?
Is it likely that I damaged the pistons at all? Crank turns fine.
I'm also wondering why my belt snapped (it wassnt in shreads)
I did crash the car, head on last month. Fixed her up, new radiator etc. Ran like a top for a few days.
I did the timing belt like 2 or 3 years ago.... my buddy effed the tensioner bolt's female threads on the block (the ol' righty loosey deal) So the tensioner is in there well enough but has a little wobble to it.

Re: Camshaft won't turn, broke timing belt
How does the tensioner spring look? Was the tensioner replaced when the timing belt was done?
The bent valve is probably keeping the cam from rotating. Valves usually take the brunt of the force.

Re: Camshaft won't turn, broke timing belt
A loose belt tensioner sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. It could've caused the belt to go off center and rub things. I would've expected to see damage though. Also, what brand belt did you use?
Re: Camshaft won't turn, broke timing belt
Maybe the valve stem itself bent as it was between a piston and a cam lobe thereby jamming into the valve guide.
I would expect the camshaft to turn backwards some if that was the case,
You pulled the head off, easy enough to pull the rockers off and see if the cam turns easily at that point. If it’s still jammed turn the head into a herb garden or something.
