Replaced the head gasket after overheating and dying. Low compression in 2 and 3
Replaced the head gasket after overheating and dying. Low compression in 2 and 3
Hello, my name is Rich, new to the Honda world. Rough start. I have a 2002 Civic 1.7 that blew a head gasket, I mean it blew, white smoke out the exhaust and ended up dying. Replace the head gasket, timing belt, waterpump ETC. Won't start. Timing belt is dead nuts aligned. Compression test #1 150, 2 and 3 at 80, Number one at 155. The head had about .010 warpage but torqued an extra 5 foot lbs around that area.
So if the car severly overheated, what should I expect? Should I take the head back off and get it surfaced and checked for cracks? Wonder if there is a common theme here?
Thank ypou

While you had the heads off, did you leak test the valves?
Using your compression tester, unscrew the dial and use the hose to adapt to a air compressor. Turn engine until the piston is on top of its power stroke .
Now you can pump 125psi air into the cyclinder and to see where it’s escaping.
Do you feel it (use tissue paper) out the oil filler opening, the exhaust pipe, the throttle body or the radiator cap..
If it’s only holding 55psi that air has to be going somewhere or everywhere...

It leaks down, I'm going to replace the head. It had a light warp so it must be more messed up than I thought. Damn aluminum. Lol.

Isn't spec head warpage .004 in. or less? Did you check the block for warpage too?... it's unlikely but still a possibility.

Well put on a different head I bought that was recently rebuilt. Car still wont start. Compression tested at 175, 120, 85, 175. I plan on putting oil in the cylinder and trying again in the am. Needless to say I still have a no start. I have spark and fuel, When I first try to start it fires, but won't fire up. Timing is dead nuts on. The head I put on was perfect. I figured with the compression they way it is it would fire up.
Help, lol. I'l keep updating.

I things my rings are FUBAR. I put oil in the cylinders 2 and 3 and had normal compression. Now I don't. I wonder when the head gasket blew and put all that water into the cylinders if screwed up the rings. So irritated right now. Third day working on this car to get it to run. Frustration isn't even the right word. To top it off my compressor just took a **** so if I wanted to try a leak down test I cannot.

Well I disconnected the knock sensor and crank sensor and it barley started with no power, 500 RPM and after 5 seconds it died again. I pulled the plugs, dried them out and pinched off the fuel line. Anything else I can disconnect to get it over the hump?
I also tested the crankshaft sensor. It tested good, ground to the sensor is also good. When testing I put my meter red in the blue wire, ground to the battery. When I rotated the pulley by hand it was going from 5v to .25v, back and forth etc.
I also disconnected all sensors related to the engine and the computer picked them all up when jumping the plug.
Just keep flooding out the engine because it wont get its *** in gear and start.
I really hope someone reads this that has had the same issue.
Thanks
