Issue after using seafoam in civic
Issue after using seafoam in civic
So i have a 2002 civic dx sedan 1.7L. Was getting a bit of black/blue dark smoke when hitting the gas hard, and burning oil a lot. I took the spark plugs out and added about 0.5 ounces of seafoam in each hole and let it sit for an hour then turned it over a few times to expel the fluid hoping it may free some gummed up rings. I also put about 1/3 of the can in the gas tank. I put the plugs back in and fired it up and let the solvent idle off for about 20 minutes. But now my exhaust is noticeably louder? There's a stainless steel header on it so no converter to be affected. Could this be related or just a coincidence? It seems to be louder near the front of the car not near the muffler. Was thinking maybe it affected the manifold gasket? I can see any issues when looking at it.

Might be as simple as a chunk of gunk broke off one or more valves so now it’s not seating evenly.
If the gunk is even, the valve can still make a reasonable seal, but knock loose a section and now there is a partial gap where the gunk was.
Oil burners have lots gunk..

It's not really a good Idea to try to clean an engine which is burning oil, imo.
The burning is due to gaps in an old engine, piston rings, combustion chamber walls and valve seals mostly. These larger gaps leak oil into to combustion chamber.
When you clean it any oil build up/carbon build up which might have developed over the gaps is removed; like removing a scab, without the scab you may bleed more/leak more.
.......
The sound is probably because the old exhaust system was rusty and full of gaps, but now the carbon has been cleaned out of the system, letting exhaust flow through the gaps.
