2001 Civic LX head Gasket Reinstall testing during assembly

I will be installing a new Honda head gasket on this 1.7. Before disassembly the HG problems was diagnosed by applying compressed air to the cylinders which made the radiator level rise up in cyl #1.

How little can I reassemble before doing some testing on the HG to verify installation?

Thanks !

Most likely full reassembly before testing as you will want oil to coat block and internals during the post repair leakdown (cylinder injection) test.

Here's a good video on head gasket replacement tips:

Everything is to be disconnected/removed has been done. Just about to remove the head bolts as described in the service manual. So no, I have not sent out the head to a shop yet.

While it's at the machine shop it would be a good time for new valve stem seals. The machinist should inspect for cracks, warpage and leaky valves.

I'm in upstate NY if someone has "a guy" for a machine shop. I don't know of any local to me. Otherwise I'll pick something out of the phone book.

If your able too, try to find out where your local dealer sends “their” work out too.

You can get a surprising amount of information from the parts counter.

Good point. I started at my local NAPA. They told me to call the regional NAPA that does machine services. Their guy was out on a cruise ship for 2 weeks but gave me another number of a guy further away than them. Called him and he was too busy but gave me his dads name and number which ended up be really close to me.
