Re: 2003 Honda Civic camshaft position sensor

Make sure the timing belt is intact, in correct time, and the tensioner has not broken its spring.... sensor wiring is securely connected...

Then I'd probably replace the cam position (CMP) sensor. The wiring that goes through the top timing cover is for the CMP sensor.
You have to remove the valve cover and the upper section of the timing cover to reach the sensor.

Any update on that? I have the similar code p0341 on 03 Civic LX. The code got set twice under high RPM and below max load going uphill at steady speed of 35 to 40mph on a dirt road.

IIRC, its a magnetic sensor (or similar method of sensing). No adjustment, just replacement. It's a fairly delicate sensor. I had one crap on me by accidentally dropping it. Do yourself a favor and make sure the mounting bolt is torqued properly. Had one vibrate itself loose and go cannibal mode on my timing belt.

Re: 2003 Honda Civic camshaft position sensor

I'm having a fairly severe issue with the camshaft sensor.

I bought the car three days ago, and on the way home (private sale) the CEL came on with power loss, shift at 3000 rpm, difficulty starting. Stopped, got the code read and was diagnosed as a bad camshaft sensor. Made sense after checking the net, so replaced the sensor and valve cover gasket while I was in there. Turned over on the first try, ran smoothly for a couple of minutes, and now I'm getting a misfire with a blinking CEL. No oil in any spark coil or wires. I'm nervous to even run it down to the auto parts store to get a reading at this point.

The car ran without a misfire before the sensor was replaced, so it doesn't make sense to me that it does now. What do you guys think the odds of me having gotten a bad sensor at the auto parts store (Advance Auto)?

We see lots of people have issues when using with non-Honda replacement sensors. Return your Advance Auto one and replace it with a Honda genuine sensor.

Re: 2003 Honda Civic camshaft position sensor

Just tossing this out there..

Check the actual timing marks while your back in there.

Certainly possible for a event such as that to “skip the belt” if it and or the tensioner is perished..

Redneck advice, just use a socket wrench with slow even pressure to turn the cam too the alignment marks. If the bottom harmonic dampener marks are nowhere to be seen, spin the cam one more turn.

Also while you have that upper timing cover off make sure the tensioner spring is still attached.

And welcome to the forum!

Re: 2003 Honda Civic camshaft position sensor

Where should the timing marks be at for proper timing (near noob engine work; done work on outer parts of the car for years)? The timing belt seemed taut with no play.

Thanks for the help, guys!

Re: 2003 Honda Civic camshaft position sensor

Hello civic owners. I just have to put this info out there. I am a GM All World and ASE Master tech (retired). My 01 Civic LX developed a drivability issue w/ CEL. Would not go over 30 mph no power intermittent. Code was TDC signal error/loss. Shut down wait re-start 50/50 run good until issue reset. Ok Cam sensor headed south. Did a a little research. Per Honda techs should replace both cam and crank sensor. Well understood. Sensors replaced now that’s then all the issues started!!!! Now upon start up PO336 set immediately goes into limp mode injectors killed at 3000rpm. ??? Ok got a bad crank sensor?? Replaced w/ 2nd new one (upgrade from first got a duralast autozone) . Exact same issue. Unable to test system after startup in limp mode yes RPM signal present. All other I mean ALL OTHER required tests completed pass. B+, 5v ref, grounds, continuity cam and crank circuits. Now In my mind I’ve created a wiring issue during repairs or just happens ECU went south w/ cam sensor??? From connectors, PGM relay to ECU to both sensors no problem found with wiring or reluctor rings. So what did I do to change cam code to crank code??? Replaced sensors. I replaced the Cam sensor a second just resurr myself no issue again with new sensor. Same exact issue PO336 immediately limp mode. Only other option..... I reinstalled the old crank sensor I took out. Guess what!!!!!!! Purring like a kitten!! Not really sure cause?? Guessing aftermarket sensors (2 different sources) just not fast enough to process signal on startup. Sensor I took out guessing OEM sensor. Yes has a dealership tech there is a quality difference in parts. I hope this just helps one person

Re: 2003 Honda Civic camshaft position sensor

A final update for others with a similar problem:

The misfire was apparently completely unrelated to the camshaft sensor issue; by pure bad luck a single fuel injector went bad at the same time as the sensor. Had it replaced, and the motor is purring like a kitten.

Thanks again for the swift and useful replies. It allowed me to rule out a number of things quickly.
