the oils a little too heavy and wouldn't lubricate properly.. ULEV vehicles have smaller oil passages and tighter tolerances.. a 30 weight is the heaviest oil you should ever use. I use 5W30 Mobil1 oil and it works grand..

Synthetic oil can be used in any car at any time. But once you switch to synthetic, you can't really go back to conventional oil.

5W50 is a thicker heavier oil.. ULEV vehicles have tighter tolerances and the oil is too thick to properly lubricate the engine and would be too much strain on your oil pump.

5W30 is perfectly fine because it's thin enough not to affect anything and the synthetic oil will lubricate better and cleaner..

Okay.. 0W, 5W 10W are the oils winter weight..this is the equivalent viscosity(thickness/weight) the oil will have at 0 degrees Farenheit. "w" stands for Winter so it behaves like 5 Weight oil in WInter.

The 20/30/50 is the actual viscosity of the oil If the oil did not have additives galore in winter it would be thick as grease. But with the additives it remains viscous in the cold

I wouldn't try 5W-50 - the viscosity at operating temperature is way too high.

I've talked to a lot of people knowledgeable in the field, and putting 5W-30 in our cars isn't THAT bad. The guys at honda make it sound like a deadly sin "You'll blow your engine in under 5000kms, one Honda Mechanic said". Then he offered to sell me the "Honda" oil at $4 a liter. Sure....

I say for optimal lubrication, go with a 5W-30 or even a 0W-30 synthetic... This "our cars can't take synthetic" is B.S. in my opinion. Synthetic's are known for their low viscosity at cold temperatures, ideal for this freaking winter...

i've used synthetic for the first at home oil change and ever since that the silver bullet runs smooth, but the first few days or so after an oil change the car runs beautiful, given the chance i would change the oil as often as i fill up on gas jesus' thats too often
