30k checkup
ok.. the guy at the honda dealer said that it was about time for my 30k checkup which includes, tire rotation(new tires so cost is deducted), oil change (just changed oil so also deducted), tranny fluid flush, coolant flush
now somehow that comes to $400 now im not sure about their math on this one... but have any of you had your car serviced in this manner?
i think its a good idea to do this, but with the new semester starting soon, i need money for my books...
what do you think?

Do the tranny and fluid flushes yourself or from a private autobody shop. Dealers always markup the costs of tune-ups. And at 30k, you really don't need all that much done.
Edit: Btw, when i had my civic i did a 34,000 km service it only cost me $164 CAD for the whole package.

well, i have to get my 10K done, so i was searching around other dealers sites for an apprx. cost...and I found that my local dealer offers the 30K service in 60 minutes or less for $225...so ya, you're gettin' reamed a new one...if they match other dealers prices/coupons, shop around a little...i dunno, I'm always one to just get stuff done at one place so I can go yell at them if something goes wrong...
i just went down the list of things and chose about 2 or 3 of them for the dealer to perform. all that other stuff was mainly bullsh!t. they wanted to perform about 300 bucks worth of stuff but i walked out of there paying about 50. dont let em yank your sausage
That's a pretty big discrepancy between what your dealer is telling you and what our manuals say, and it seems kinda early for that kind of servicing.
According to the manual, for "SEVERE" conditions, the engine coolant should be replaced every 60,000 miles (after the 1st time at 120,000 miles). And the tranny fluid at 60,000 miles. Our cars are even advertised as having extended maintenance intervals so you may as well try and take advantage of that to save some money.
Maybe not follow the manual down to the last mile, but certainly not as early as 30,000 miles for a tranny and coolant flush.
Don't forget, dealers want you to go in as often as possible for maintenance since that's where they make most of their money.

True, many parts of our cars don't require maintainance as often as some. I like knowing I don't need to flush alot of money every other oil change. But I do feel that the ATF should be changed at 30k, because I plan on keeping the car until higher mileage, and I learned our cars don't use filters for the ATF, and alot of other cars do. Most everything else I do according to the manual, under severe conditions. I'm no longer going to the dealer for that crap, either. There's a honda specialist in ft.worth that does better work than the dealer, and his Mobile 1 oil changes are 22.50.
DO NOT change the coolant !
The owner's manual does not recommend changing the engine coolant until 120,000 under either normal or severe conditions. The coolant was formulated and implemented to your vehicle at the factory, to tamper with it at this point could prove to be counter productive.
The transmission fluid is not recommended for change until 60,000 miles under severe conditions. Likewise there should be no reason to change it at 30,000 miles. You can inspect it yourself and if it is still the normal red color, why would you want to change it. At any rate, if you are losing sleep over it, I would wait to 50,000 miles, anyway. ( I myself will never change it during the time I own this car....)
Maybe 50,000 tranny 100,000 coolant would be reasonable, unless there is a problem.
I'm surprised that the dealer didn't mention the brake fluid. That is supposed to be changed at 36 months regardless of mileage.

Changing coolant is like changing your oil. There's absolutely no harm in doing it a little more often than normal. The coolant that comes in your car is the same Honda Type-2 50/50 pre-diluted mix that you can buy for around $9-10 a gallon at your Honda dealership. Personally I would not go over 45k without changing the coolant. Sure I could probably go 60k and beyond with the factory coolant, but why risk it? $10-12 is a small price to pay for peace of mind that my car is probably not going to overheat.
It's standard procedure for Honda dealerships for a 30k interval service to change the coolant, brake fluid, A/C filter, and adjust the valves (if necessary). This is in addition to the usual stuff (oil change, tire rotation, check brakes, et al). But yeah dealerships do tend to overcharge for all of this stuff, and most of it is simple enough to do yourself.
In my opinion, the intervals listed in the owner's manual are stretching it a bit too, and I wouldn't feel comfortable changing my oil every 7000 miles or waiting 100,000+ miles to change the coolant.
Better to be safe than sorry.

Yeah thats how I feel about it also, Htown. I don't act paranoid about it all, but I do keep up with all that stuff, esp. the ATF changes. Reguarding valve adjustments, I've been told that some people may have valves that are overtightened from the factory, causing a rough idle. But this is a small percent of Civics and new CRV's. Mine was checked out to have a smooth idle, so its all good.
