30 thousand mile checkup
Hey guys,
I searched the forums and read the owner's manual and i still have a couple of
questions about the 30 thousand mile checkup. Which of the things listed in the manual to check is really needed? Honda quoted me over $300 to do the checkup...isn't that a little pricey? What did, or would all u guys do when your car hit 30 thousand miles? Thanks in advance for
your advice.

I would, rotate tires, change oil, air filter, check belts, ajust throt. cable, check tires for abnormal wear, ajust parking break, use fuel cleaner. I think thats about it. I wouldn't worry about, A/C or flushing radiator coolant till 60,000.

Thanks a lot. thats pretty much what i was thinking. Do you know how much a shop would charge for just checking the belts cause i can do pretty much everything else myself?
Yeah you should be able to do it yourself, if not no other shop would charge $300 for a checkup, i think my local shop charges $129.00 for all the above listed. I would buy a guide for the civic. Like a Hayes manual. It shows what to check for as far as any abnormal belt wear and what the tension should feel like.
Also i forgot, don't forget to check the spark plugs, break pads, hoses and CV boots.

At 30K (well 27 actually) I changed the Sparkplugs, Transmission sludge and oil, looked at the brakes, looked at the CV joints, and belts, all of which looked fine, didn't worry about the intake filter cuz I just cleaned it 6 weeks ago and didn't worry about the tires cuz I just put them back on a month ago. Spend $60 in parts, 3 hrs DIYing it, and told Honda to stick it.
AT 30k service, since I pull the parts at work I should know =), you get a new valve cover gasket because they adjust the valves, change tranny fluid, motor oil, filter, air filter change, inspect brakes, washer fliud and brake fliud =) thats it

i didnt do mine. that is VERY pricey, and alot of that stuff listed in the manual... the stuff they do, if u notice, it says "check... this and check... that" only a few things are actually replaced. so your paying them $300 to look at your engine. and im not saying that will say this, but they easily could say "well, he doesnt know what to look for, so he wont even know if i changed anything" now im sure they are more honest than that, but u never know. i just dont understand why other cars dont have that expensive of a tune up like hondas do. kinda dumb

I didn't do **** and mines running fine. I'm about to hit 60k so I'm going to replace the timing belt, spark plugs, coolant flush, change oil and filter, clean air filter, and adjust the valves. Most of it will wait a week or so until I can get a feeler gauge to use on the valves.

thanks for everyones advice. I really appreciate it. I think i'm going to go buy the hayes manual and then "change" everything i can do myself and then take my car to a shop to get everything "checked".
i've owned a few hondas and have never replaced anything until 100k and only do the usual oil change like usual but never do anything major until after 100K. and have an old school accord going on 240k. depends on your driving style but i've never had a problem and use to run my integra hard all the time and it ran great until someone hit me and I spun and totalled it. just my .02 cents.
