Accord or Altima?

Can anyone give me a suggestion between the 03 coupe accord LX and the 03 Altima? Both 4 cyl, which is better? What is the main difference between a LX accord and EX accord? Thanks...

difference is a sun roof that's it, maybe some other smaller details added. I may be mistaken but there is no difference with the engine.

I do believe that the altima has 15 more hp.

BTW it's an Altima 2.5 S I'm looking at. Which one is more reliable?

Once youve been in a nissan, all hondas feel like getting back in a cavalier after driving a cadillac. Ok, correction, all but the s2000, that car just fits my body like a glove, and lets all face it, that car has HUGE *****!!!! 4 cylinder that has a stock dual exhaust that actually is beneficial to vehicle. Test drive them both and make your decision, but make sure you tell both dealers that your looking at the other models, they will throw bullshit your way, but if you research the cars youll know what they are spoonfeeding you and what you really need to hear. You can usually get a better deal on them if they know threes competition, jsut dont get too greedy thou cuz they WILL eventually tell you to just go with the other car since they know that there are plenty of people that want the car your bargaining for.

The Altima has a manual transmission for both the 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder models already. The V6 Accord will have the 6 speed in February, I believe. If you are looking at a manual, I think that the Altima would be a better choice. (I feel that the tranny is better in the Altima). Good Luck

i think there are some money restrictions in what he is buying....if hes looking at the accord lx, although he didnt specify what trim level altima hes looking at, i believe its safe to assume that the 3.5 is out of reach.

Smart man you are....I am looking to buy one for my son, he's 17. I don't want to get him a 6 cyl. Now I'm thinking about it, do I really want him to drive and maybe crash a 21000 dollar car? I am still debating on whether or not to get him a civic coupe.

Also, if I get him the altima, it will be the 2.5S

Ok, I am 19, and I bought my civic myself... Unless your kid is a genius and is valedictorian (or really high in his class) OR, if he has done something extraordinary, do NOT spoil him... Get him a used car. My first one was a clunker but hear this:

A. A used car will teach him that transportation is transportation. All you need to do is to get from point A to point B.

B. It will teach him about cars and responsibility by keeping him in tune with its needs.

C. He will learn how to fix cars (saving both of you money down the road).

D. It is cheaper. He will set goals and reach them eventually.

I know you will say that a new car is more reliable and all that jazz, but I'm not asking you to get him what I had... But what is wrong with a 5th or 6th gen civic (anywhere from say 93 an higher) or somewhere in that range? Those cars are good too. I just think that this whole thing about used cars being crap is overrated... People upgrade, and sometimes, take really good care of their cars, hence honda's certified vehicles. Please reconsider, but if not, at least stay in the family and get the accord.

Edit: By the way, I love my car, keep it as an option. Also, no matter how much complaining you may hear about getting a used car or something cheaper than what he wants (and I'm not saying that he is even complaining, but I did about my first car kinda), a boy loves his car, no matter what it is, especially if it is his first one. Mine ran like 10 mpg (bad example) but I still loved it (see point A) because I was on my own.

Yea, i agree with the responsibility thing, give him something that will teach him to appreciate what he has and to learn how to take care of it. I just traded in my 01 ex that i have been paying on for the past 2 years for a brand new 350Z and believe me when i say that it was teh toughest thing to do, but i feel that i want a car that i will be able to enjoy in 5 years, and i dont see the civic as that car. I now have a vehicle that demands respect and will teach me how to fully appreciate the road. I bought it to enjoy it, so i dont worry about the monthly bill, but i wouldnt have purchased it if i couldnt do it on my own. I dont want to over extend myself because there are far more important things than cars to worry about but since now is now, i can always downgrade when other things become a higher priority than what kind of car i drive.

I hate to say this, but if your decision is to buy an Accord, please wait for the 2004 model. I will never buy a first year new model ever again because of the rattles and warranty repairs on the civic. Just not worth it, especially when cars are so expensive in the first place these days. Problem is, you're probably looking to buy soon anyway, so my choice would be the Altima, and I'm even Honda loyal. See, the Altima itself is new, but not a first year, so you're not buying into a design that would be beat by the Accord or about to be ditched by Nissan. And that way, you keep your value longer than buying the last year of a generation, only to depreciate very soon when replaced. Nissans are great, their engines are remarkable. Most educated people on the subject will just say its a toss up and tell you to flip a coin or that you're losing nothing with either of them. But I will tell you to go ahead and see what kind of deal you can get on the Altima. (also, some places, the accord is "so new" that more ppl are buying them at or closer to MSRP than they will be a year or two from now when the "newness" wears off).

On a side note, the above was just to adress your question pertaining to the Accord LX vs. Altima 2.5. I wanted to give input about the Civic. The civic wouldn't be a bad choice for your son, as it would be an '03. They are smooth cars for the price, if you'd rather save yourself some money. I'm not sure how the insurance is compared to the Altima sedan. If you choose civic, talk to your son about a manual transmission....I'm not a huge fan of Honda auto's,(toyota's are smoother and more solid) and the manual needs so much less maintainance.....(honda specialists reccomend changing honda auto tranny fluid every 15k; they change 3qts at a time, so after a few changes, the entire capacity is mostly fresh; as these civic auto's don't have auto tranny fluid filters like toyota's and various other makes).

Altima has a very cheap interior. The cheapness will hit you in the back of the head as soon as you get in the darn thing. Ugly imo as well.

Accord has a much nicer looking interior imo. It is undoubtedly of higher quality. Accord has better resale, reliability, and quality.

And to whom ever made the comment about the caddy and cav, you must be outta your mind. If nissan was so great they wouldn't be just picking their head up off the ground...Honda and toyota have been putting them to shame for years and continue to do so.

Oh, my parents have owned caddys before and I wouldn't compare the quality of a caddy to a cav much less a honda. I would say a caddy's quality is equal to the cav.

It's amazing how myopic some people become once they own something...the simple fact that they own it makes it better..

the 2001 civics were based on a completely new platform, and had more than considerable revisions from the 6th gen, while the 2003 accord is a thoroughly revised but similar design when compared to the previous generation. i would safely say that the new accord has far fewer first-year bugs than the civic did, simply because it didn't undergo as many changes under the skin. overall, the accord is by far more refined than the altima. i have tested a altima 3.5SE, and believe me, that thing feels like it's about to fall apart under full throttle. honestly i would choose between the accord and the camry, and probably not even consider the altima. i love the look of the new camrys, except maybe the tail lights.

Ok, just to set things straight here, my reference was based on the difference in comfort between the altima and new accord, between the 2 the altima has a much more comfortable interior than the new accord. I have to disagree completely about the altima being ugly as you state, I find the altima to be a MUCH nicer quality vehicle inside and out using very modern styling cues in its design. Yes, i have been in both and test driven them.

I have never been uncomfortable in ANY Nissan vehicle, not even my friends old pickup with a big nasty bench seat. To be honest, I love the way the civic seated, but it was incredibly uncomfortable for anything more than a daily commute to work and back. The new accord has that same feel to it, honda is trying to make the new accord seem to be something it is NOT. (a full sized luxury sedan)

Wherever you got the idea that Nissan is picking their head up off the ground as honda and toyota put them to shame is beyond me. Perhaps you misread my post? I was not stating anything about Nissan being a cadillac compared to honda being a cavalier. I was just referencing to the comfort level between the two as a daily driver. How are you to state that the accord is a more reliable car? have you traveled to the future to see how well the new model has held up over the past 5 years? The altima has already been out for 2 model years now and has yet to have a crucial recall.

Yes its true that you become partial to your OWN cars, but this thread was started to help someone with their decision-making process. People that are partial to Honda should not just say HONDA ALL THE WAY because of that simple singlemindedness you refer to. I am stating all the basic facts as i see them because i have recently been thru the whole new car buying thing as i was shopping for my new car. To be honest i would be driving another Honda right now if they would have made a stock hardtop s2000 so i dont believe that i am being partial to any vehicle.

Like i stated already before, If you are buying the car, just go out for your test drives, take your son with and let him drive them, its going to be the car HE drives on a regular basis and should be happy with the car he will be driving.

Altima?

Go for the Accord...it's one fine beauty inside. Yeah so the 2003 Sedan style is ugly..but hey..there's always the 2003 Coupe *wink*. Either way..I've known soo many people that have had trouble with their Altima's and Nissan's in general. I truly can tell you theres nothing better than driving in an Accord My 2000 Accord SE I had was just wonderfull. I NEVER once had a problem with it.

My mother had a 1990 Honda EX and it lasted an amazing 10 years with us untill we had to sell it..and now somebody else is driving it :] You CAN rely on Honda's...my dad's old Nissan truck was terrible..he refuses ever to buy a Nissan again in his life. But even now that I have my 02 Civic LX Coupe..I can tell you that I DO miss my Accord alot.
