ex & hx differences...
whats the difference between the ex engine and hx engine???are the cams different? if i put in an ex ecu, will it run like the ex? will it take out "lean burn"?
Right, I'm in the same situation. Also, if you have an HX with CVT adding performance mods will cause CVT to fail. I'm sure there are ways around HX's limitations, but I've yet to completely figure them out. Anyway, it's more economical to just trade them damn thing in for something faster than all Honda's anyway...I'm looking at a Thunderbird Super Coupe at the moment. woah...how will performance mods cause the cvt to fail? i have aem sri,hp header,n1 exhaust and no cats, and NOS. ive never noticed anything wrong w/ the cvt? it cant handle the power or what??
Right, it can't handle the power. I'm surprised NOS even works on an HX. Is your car chipped, or have an A/F controller? ...but anyway, CVT wasn't designed to handle HP much higher than stock. There's a Yahoo! club out there dedicated to the HX CVT that discusses this more in detail.

i spray through every light lol. well not really. like 5-9 times a day.....its a 75 shot. i had 85 but i kinda blew my rings so i lowered the shot and ive had no problems. as for retarding.... i am using bosch platinum+4 and no retard. havent had any problem.
...I can believe your engine is still alive...not to mention your transaxle. I don't know what to say, your defying everything I've learned about the HX. Oh, and you might want to pick up some NGK plugs...I've heard nothing but bad things about the Bosch +4s...also, go copper...you get more power out of them, but have to replace them more often.

yea. i hate these platinum 4s they suck BIG donkey *****!!!!! i only put them in because tey were free.i was thinking of denso instead of ngk. but i guess ill buy em both and see what i like better. and if something in my engine messes up, that wont be a problem for me. i am a student at uti(universal technical institute) and i can get parts for pretty cheap and my buddies and i will work on the engine.
Denso makes good plugs also. I think those are OEM for Honda?
The next mod for your HX should be trying to find a way to beef up the CVT.
You might want to check out this group: Yahoo! Civic HX CVT Club

If you swapped to an EX 5-speed, you're HX would either do one of the following:
1) Attempt to lean burn at much higher RPMs (not good)
2) Hardly ever lean burn (good if you want power)
Since the only published info on how the lean-burn system works is that it engages below 70mph (i think)...option 1 seems likely. But they may just say that because it lean-burns on an HX 5-speed at anything below 3100rpm (option 2 since yer RPMs will be much higher with the EX 5-speed)....hmmm, this is making my brain hurt.

Whats up guys- I love my HX, I have a 5-speed and can hit 105mph in 3rd gear. I'm so glad that someone is spraying in an HX, it gives me hope. I was concerned that the car ran too lean to spray. CivicHX81 you hooked it up yourself?

yes i hooked up the system by myself. its very easy if yourre good at electronics.cuz thats the only hard part of installing a nitrous system. very soon i will be opening up the tranny and seeing if i can get a better cvt belt in.this way there will not be any problems w/ cvts failing at all.

I hear ya Darkcivic, I hit 105 the other night in 3rd. My Hx is great, I have had no problems with my mods! I have the 5speed. It's not the fastest thing in the world but it works for me! Have you taken it to the track civichx81, and if so what kinda times are you running?

ya know what...i dunno if the belts are the same. ive noticed that there are like 3 or 4 different cvts.like the way they work is different but its all relative. but there are audis at my school. ill ask my teacher nextweek about the differences in the cvts.
From http://www.jsonline.com/wheels/test/feb02/23135.asp:
"Until Audi refined the concept, however, CVTs were limited mainly to small, low-powered cars. That's because the belts and pulleys couldn't handle the power output of larger engines.
Audi solved that by substituting a special chain for the belt and figuring out a way to make it ride reliably on the split pulleys, which Audi calls variators."
Variators? Hmm... I'm going to have to start researching this.

The HX is geared way more towards fuel economy....you also get alloys standard (however in 03 EX's will get alloys as well).
EX you will still get good gas economy, but a reduced a little at the sake of "performance" if you could call it that. You also get the sunroof
