Why is the third brake light here?

The newer Olds Auroras have them too. but they have a light on both sides of the bumper. They light up with the headlights. I think that huge Toyota SUV has them too, but that's prolly so you can see the brake lights without craning your neck up to see them.
Brake lights have gotten so bright now that the 3rd light is useless now. You can actually tell that the brake lights are on. And there are people who blow brakelights never care to replace them (yes, I have seen cars with no brake lights) so they may as well get rid of the 3rd light, it doesn't really do much anymore.
