Front strut dust bellow

My 2007 Civic Coupe EX front strut boots have bitten the dust. Think I can do this? Jack the car and jackstand both sides. Remove the wheels with the spring pulled down, it opening the gap between coils. Place another jack on the brake rotor and raise slightly so it cannot drop any further down. Removing the cover around the wipers to access the center strut shaft and remove the shaft nut. Push the shaft down. With it down, I was going to take the boot bellow after it sat in the hot sun and slide it between the coil spring and over the shaft. Zip tie it to the stop bushing and attach the strut top nut. Anyone done this and lived thru it?

Check your medical insurance and life insurance!

Dude, you are wanting to f*** with a live grenade.

If you try to push the strut shaft out of the mounts center hole, that spring will shift with several hundred pounds of pressure and you won't stop it from trying to blow the bottom half of the strut or the spring out sideways through your legs.
If you happen to be standing by the fender when it decides to take your head off, it will. (think about it LOL)
If you have your hands wrapped around the spring when it lets go.......
No. Just don't.

Remove the strut assembly from the car as a complete unit.
Borrow or have someone use a real spring compressor and do this the correct way so nobody has to see the inside of an ambulance.

Most people just ignore the split boots until the struts need replaced and do it all at the same time.

OK..all fixed and the lowdown. After regarding ezone's post. He is correct. Unlike my old Civic with the modified strut that had the spring separate, when you drop the shaft out, the lower end can pivot around. I have the draw clamps for the spring but since I was alone and figured the shock was probably gas and would want to stay up, I just fixed it like a 300Z that I worked on not too long ago. I simply took the $12.00 boot and split it. The I used a wide ziptie at the bottom and three more ever few inches up the noot pulled up so the V overlapped. Took all of 30 minutes. Not even necessary to remove wheel.. Just jack it up and set the stands. However, I pulled wheels to check everything anyway. Now I do not need to hear the dealer tell me I need to replace struts when he does free oil and state inspection. Thanks all, even lowlife whatever he means.

?

you mean the older ones with the torsion bars?

all that i remember are the torsion bars, then the coils over the shocks for all other generations, until this new generation, in the rear, having the springs separate from the shocks

You were only 13...HA. 1985 4 door sedan Civic. Did it have torsion bars? Know I dropped the shock rod down numerous time because something was making a clicking noise. I had a 1979 Mustang with the modified McPherson Struts with a separate spring on the upper control rod. I may be confused with it.
