Replace or tighten squealing belts?

I have the classic squealing belt issue. I have used belt dressing to reduce the squeal but it is now as bad as ever. The car now has 152K and we had the belts replaced at 105K when the timing belt was replaced. My mechanic will be replacing a front strut spring tomorrow. He recommends replacing both belts instead of just tightening them because they were treated with belt dressing. Is belt replacement necessary in this case? Anyone ever have any experience with just tightening squealing belts that were "dressed" with belt lubricant?

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Re: Replace or tighten squealing belts?

first of all....are you sure the belt or belts are the problem?

when did this start happening? any recent work done?

its not common for a belt to start all of a sudden sqealing

you could have a pulley causing the noise, alternator, A/C, power steering

its pretty easy to check if they are tight enough, just push on them with your finger, they should be pretty tight, maybe flex about 1/4 inch or so?

belts dont normally squeal unless they are MAJORLY loose

Re: Replace or tighten squealing belts?

Good point. The belts all appear to be tight. This may be a pulley wheel or bearing issue after all.
