THE OIL....
IS...
PURPLE

hey kenny, you should take a look into the new purelator synthetic filters. its basically a synthetic medium with all that fancy wire crap. rated at 10k miles as well.
and its about $12 bucks.
also, give the purlator pureone a try. it has a 99.9% filtration efficiency @ 20 microns.
plus, its yellow. and we all know yellow things are JDM and faster.

Re: FRAM oil filter haters...
having such a high filtration rate makes me a bit nervous sometimes. if it filters so well, how fast can it actually pass fluid?

Guess what I found?
It's not like all these companies don't do their own in house R&D.
Anyone see anything interesting between the FRAM burst tests and this? lol
It does skim over how "Other filters" use a cellulose blend (Like Fram does) filter media
That depends on the holding capabilities of the filter. If it becomes clogged, the bypass filter then opens to keep the oil flowing. Though, if the oil is going through the bypass, it renders the filter useless as it's not filtrating at all.

Since my life is so terribly exciting, I decided to open one of my old Honda filters and check it out....

Re: FRAM oil filter haters...
The video still mentions their 99.xx% @ 25 micron efficiency again.
Again with this:
That means that particles smaller than 25 microns are getting through.
An aside:
Oil manufacturers that don't actually meet all of a particular set of specifications tend to use bottle labeling that has a very similar type of misleading statements.
Example: Read the wording on a bottle of oil that didn't actually meet GM's Dexos oil specs. Read how much they WANT you to believe it really did meet specs.
Sure doesn't look full to me. LOL

Re: FRAM oil filter haters...
thats why i went for amsoil filters. their rate is a bit lower, but it can hold more and flow better. it also solved the possible issue i had with the oil light turning on for a second right after starting the car on a cold day when using wix/mobil1/kn filters. this stopped when i switched to amsoil filter and has never happened again. im using redline synthetic oil too for over a year now. amsoil is 98.7% at 20 microns. admittedly better than most filters available. i also have to wonder about which brands are changing the numbers to make themselves look better. not to mention, the amsoil has nothing to actually break down over time. the most solid filter ive ever seen. i dont think i could ever use anything else.

issue i had with the oil light turning on for a second right after starting the car on a cold day
An anti-drainback valve helps a lot for this, especially when using a larger volume filter.
Example: Old Mopars (slant 6?) that had a HUGE filter mounted with the threaded end down could knock and rattle for a long time until the filter got filled with oil. Eventually they could beat themselves to death.
Anti-drainback valve in the oil filter got them quiet right away after a startup.
A small capacity (meaning liquid volume) filter allows more rapid filling and pressure light goes out sooner.
My lowrider has the filter mounted horizontally on the side of the block. It sits a lot. I want the smallest oil filter I can get so there is minimal delay getting oil pressure when I start cranking it.
Civics 8th gen --and newer-- (among others) have the oil filters mounted with the threaded end UP, so the filter cannot drain itself overnight. We don't have the issue at all.
Just FYI. HTH
Re: FRAM oil filter haters...
I have a story. When I buy the filter at honda dealer, they always give me the filtech ver. (A01). But when I had oil changed at the same dealer, they gave me the A02 FRAM. I am like...

but I am not a fram hater. I used fram extra guard and tough guard when I drove Ford escort.
gearbox,
I had the oil light coming on when I used Wix filter too. It didn't happen when I use the A01, Bosch and Mobil 1 (not the current one)
There is a trade off between flow rate vs filtration rate for sure. But $16 is really expensive.
Have you guys ever tried MANN filter? Amsoil website has the one for a Civic too.

Re: FRAM oil filter haters...
all the filters ive used had anti drain back valve. the issue actually only started when i first switched to redline synthetic almost 2 yrs ago. maybe its not quite compatible with the "standard" filters i used like the mobil1 and wix and K&N. cant really explain it other that it happened and now its fixed. hopefully didnt do much damage in the year i used the regular filter and had the light flashing on.

Re: FRAM oil filter haters...
^yes. synthetic oil has certain additives that run close to 20 microns... and THAT is the reason why oil filters dont filter any lower than the 20 micron mark.
so in fact that its not that filter companies cant make a better filtering medium, but because it would be disadvantageous for you.
even those stainless filters filter only 20 microns.

Unfortunately maple syrup costs twice as much as oil.
