Exclamation alternator or battery

I have a 03 civic si and I am having a bad dimming problem. I am currently using a titanum battery from advance. Which should I do a high output alternator or a yellow top, kintek, stinger. Any suggestions?

Re: alternator or battery

depends....if you are running 800 rms watts or less i would just get a yellow top and upgrade the big 3 (search big 3 upgrade), and throw in a capacitor. Now once you get past 800 rms watts i would consider a high output alternator because all that power will destroy your battery and alternator.. Take it from experience, i was running about 2000 watts rms off my stock electric system and after a couple months my battery became very weak and eventually my alternator failed.

How do I know how much I am running? I bought the amp used from a friend. It is a punch 45 so I am asuming it is 450 bridged? It is pushing two w3 10's.

Re: alternator or battery

the battery is new or old? if you dont have a sound system you should be fine with an OEM alternator from autozone. if you are pushing 800rms like bigvic said you should upgrade your alt. check alterstart.com... they make high output alts. i ran 1000rms of power with a capacitor and my stock alt failed in a week.

Re: alternator or battery

If you are running 2 10" jl w3's then you need an amp that pushes at least 600watts rms...those subs are 300rms each. that punch amp is too weak for those subs..u could damage them if you continue wit that amp by underpowering them....and yes since your subs require 600 watts to achieve maximum performance i would go ahead and just get an optima yellow top battery......but again make sure u upgrade ur BIG 3...and the ground wire from ur amp should be no longer than 12-18 inches,. Also go get urself a capacitor...it helps with dimming issues.

Re: alternator or battery

bigger battery wont help your problem of not making enough power. you need bigger alt. a bigger battery will only take longer to drain than a weaker one, and then the problem is still there.

Re: alternator or battery

yeah you need a new alt. if your pushing that 0 gauge wire it is probably sucking up a lot of power from the battery. maybe a capictor will help slow down the process. what i did was run my battery charger over night every other day to keep the battery charged. lol

Re: alternator or battery

I would never suggest for anyone to upgrade just the alternator or just the battery.

If you do the battery and not the alternator, that weak 70 amp alternator that came with your car is going to burn out trying to keep that monster battery charged.

If you do the opposite, the alternator is going to be jamming all that extra power into the crappy battery and kill it.

They need to match.
