I know nothing about reliablity or how one car falls apart better than the other one. Do the research and get what you like. My friend just got a mazda 3 and she loves it even though some idiot wrecked into her (car is still driveable). I'd stick with 4 cyl. though thats just me. The mazda speed6 looks pretty cool not sure what kind of numbers those can put down but it's AWD.

Your right, the S40 is based on the 3/Focus platform. The original Mazda3 was based on the Ford C-Max minivan in Europe (pretty much a Mazda3 5-door) which was developed at the same time as the new Focus as part of the Ford C1 platform.
