6th gear

why dont they put a 6th gear in all manual cars? you could save soo much gas with high way driving. rpm's are soo high in fifth doing 120km's like almost 5000..... why dont they just add one?

gear box too small?

Maybe it takes as much power as our civics have at that rpm to go that fast? It makes sense to change out your transmition to a 6 gear transmition if you add more horsepower though.

I thnk Grey is right. More HP = 6th gear.

Although sometimes I feel as though I could use a 6th gear in my car, i don't believe it's very necessary.

all i gotta say is it would help with mileage. 6th gear would give a much lower rpm. therefore better mpg

i dont mean to adjust the other gear ratios. cause u would be switching gears every second.

Yeah, you could use that when you have the cruise set above 80 or so.. This may sound kinda dumb, but how hard would mounting a celica GTS 6-speed transmission in a civic be? I'm not actually going to do it.. just curious.

I know even you put 6th gear on your car you have the the same RPM speed while doin 140 km/hr on the 5th gear. Its just the Ratio is more close. And they make the 1st gear much lower ratio to give you a more pull. Unless you have a powerful car that needs an top end gear ratio. But if you do this to a economy car You suffer a lot of acceleration.

Aren't the 6-speeds on Celica GT-S's hard to shift with? (So I heard?) I'm just curious... but at any rate, I couldn't agree with a 6-speed on a Civic. Look at where it redlines at. You can't even redline 5th gear and it takes me a while to even hit 120, so if you go into 6th gear with 127bhp at like 100... where are you gonna go when the car is already accelerating slow in 5th? (lol, in fact... what acceleration?) Hm. I guess it would quiet the car down.

yeah ive been wishing the car had a 6th gear to help gas mileage too. i keep thinking its time to shift after 5th, but there are no more gears. imagine how good highway mileage would be with one!

That's what my point was though. Maybe our cars don't have enough power to use a 6th gear at high speed. It takes a lot of power just to overcome the force of the air moving past the car (our cars aren't all that aerodynamic either). If we had a 6th gear, the rpm's would drop and so would the power. The power that our engines output increases as the rpm's increase; well, practically every internal combustion engine is this way. Get what I'm saying?

You guys should have gotten an HX. I have the VTEC but my RPM's stay lower than on a EX. 80mph in 5th gear @3000prm.

Seriously? That's sweet! You'll hit the speed limiter before hitting the rev limiter then. What's the fastest you've ever gone? Have you tested? Is there a speed limiter? I know there is a rev limiter.

Doing around 90mph is like 4500 rmps. Thats too high for a 680 mile trip. Lets all write Honda and tell them we need a 6spd in our cars. There going to laugh and say go buy a RSX-S, but who cares.

if they added a sixth gear the car would cost more money.
