I also suggest if people don't have anything to contribute to the thread, then refrain from posting.

If you're going 45mph in 5th and you want to downshift to 2nd, you can do it without really any trouble. If you're going 75mph in 5th and you want to downshift to 2nd, you could definitely cause some valve/piston contact and F up your engine.

FYI:
The redline mph of each gear in a stock EX manual are:
1st=30mph
2nd=60mph
3rd=80mph
In other words, if you drive an EX MT and you try to drop it from 5th into 2nd while you're going faster than 60 mph, you're fvcked.
Oh yeah, if you don't rev match correctly when you downshift, you can burn up your transmission pretty fast. I downshift through multiple gears all the time, but I ALWAYS rev match correctly for the speed I'm going. I love it when I downshift perfectly and the car just roars and takes off silky-smooth.

I still don't get it how people misshift from 5th to 2nd. Even if I try to do it, the gates simply won't take it, as if they knew the engine's going to blow. I'm no mechanic, but I understand that the stick always has to flow smoothly from gate to gate without any force and upshifts/downshifts should always feel smooth. All that excessive force when shifting is just dumb. I am starting to congratulate myself even more for having bought my civic brand new.
if i misshifted from 5th to second... (notice that the if is written in bold because i am not stupid enough to do so unless im going like 1000 rpm in 5th which i wouldnt be neway) my car would get up and back hand me in the face
That kind of thing used to happen now and again w. Celica GT-S, with their higher redlines they weren't forgiving. I think there was a mention once of a GT-S on this forum that mis shifted and the techie guy who was doing the post mortem the day after found that the ECU said the car spiked at 14,000RPM before it died.
Theres also a vid somewhere of a TypeS misshifting somewhere on here, the guy engine basically explodes on the highway and he goes back w. the camera and you can see a looong trail of oil and then large chunks of metal on the road and in whats left of his oil pan after the aforementioned large chunks of metal blew through it.
Edit: I'm not sure if the TypeS thing is from the same vid on pg2. the vid. I saw showed the guy going back to look at the oil splotch on the pavement.

If you're OVER 60mph, like racing.... lets say redlining 3rd gear and shifting to 4th, but instead you accidentally shift to 2nd? It causes what's called a mechanical overrev.
No amount of rev limiter in the world will prevent this. You mechanically force the engine to overrev way beyond redline, and you can kiss your valvetrain and engine goodbye. Several THOUSAND dollars at LEAST to repair. It's a very VERY expensive mistake. And no.... it's not covered by warranty. And YES, the ECU/PCM in the civic WILL record a mechanical overrev so the dealership will know you've done it.
