yiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnggggggggggggggggggggggg
a friend of mine showed me how the rev limiter works, on his old 95 hatch..
kinda funny cause his dad is a mechanic, and he works on motorcycles and stuff, he said "it's a honda, it can take it"

haha, I do that once in a while, but mainly b/c the engine is going at around 1600RPM/40MPH when I'm in a bit of traffic; then traffic clears up. It's actually kind of fun if you can match rev and just take off.

went from 3rd to 2nd at around 55-60(usually I can hold 2nd till about 60) when I was about to race a TC last week. Bounced off the rev limiter and quickly shifted back to third. Everything seems to be alright.
Pissed me off though.
Since I was right around 60 I guess it wasn't too bad, thanks to the rev limiter.

Here's the problem.
If you're OVER 60mph, like racing.... lets say redlining 3rd gear and shifting to 4th, but instead you accidentally shift to 2nd? It causes what's called a mechanical overrev.
No amount of rev limiter in the world will prevent this. You mechanically force the engine to overrev way beyond redline, and you can kiss your valvetrain and engine goodbye. Several THOUSAND dollars at LEAST to repair. It's a very VERY expensive mistake. And no.... it's not covered by warranty. And YES, the ECU/PCM in the civic WILL record a mechanical overrev so the dealership will know you've done it.

Over at Bimmerforums we call that the "money shift". No need to explain the "money" part.
I've heard of this happening quite frequently; redline 3rd, shift to 4th.....BAM and you accidentally shift into 2nd. Not a pretty sight.
So you say, oh no worries the rev-limiter will catch it. Wrong. If you are going to fast for the gear you shifted in, your motor will still spin waaaay higher than it supposed to be.
One method to prevent this is to back hand the 3rd--4th shift, or the down shift from 5th--4th.
edit: S2000man01 beat me to it!

it seems kinda hard to miss 4th coming from 3rd, but i guess if you just plain sucked at driving a manual it could happen.
probably not much of a help because all the pics are down but I Read about this a few years ago

Few years ago, I had a friend with a 92 teg gsr...he was on some open road in texas doing over 110 in fifth...went to downshift to pass another car (why he would need more power at that point to pass her I have no idea, but whatever) and he missed fourth and hit second...he blew his engine, his car broke loose, flipped over the k-2 median, over the opposing three lanes (he's lucky it was around three am and there was no traffic) and flipped and rolled 500 feet into the field nearby. His right arm and his brother's (passenger) left arm both went up through the sunroof and were crushed...my buddy's is still paralyzed and his brother got his thumb severed off...they found it 65 feet away and had to reattach it....among other injuries...anyways....you have fun with the downshifting and let us know how it goes.

Wow, u must really suck at driving if u do that. Ive missed upshifting b4, but that just bounces off the revlimiter, nothing major, but downshifting, even if ur double clutching/matching rev's, u really shouldnt be doing it if u dont know ur RPM's...
