RWD Roadster in Winter?
Anyone have experience driving a RWD roadster in really bad winter weather? (miata,s2000 etc). I'm seriously considering trading in the civic for a Pontiac Solstice when they become available, but I live in Minnesota and I'm not sure if it would be able to handle somewhat heavy snow and ice. For some reason I am absolutely in love with the design of this car. It is a huge step in the right direction for GM. Just wondering if these types of cars work well with a good set of snow tires, or if there is absolutely no hope for them.

you should be able to drive it in the winter. i've seen M3 cabs driving around in 3" high snow that I had trouble driving around in.
i too live in Minnesota and everyone i know that has a RWD has an extra car for the winter. They drive like M3s and Lexus GS and alot of other RWD cars, so they just buy a junky for winter. you can do it but why would you want to take a chance of wrecking your car?

i've heard everyone of them saying that going uphill is a bitch. i have a friend told me that she almost sold her lexus gs when you first bought it because she couldn't go uphill with it. she used to drive a celica and she said it was so much better then the GS during the winter time. if you gonna drive a RWD in winter, you better spend some bucks for good winter tires.

Mak sure your tires & driving is up to par for the weather your driving in, & dont do anything stupid & you should be fine. Actually it can be quite fun...ask me how I know
The real thing to worry about is not you, but others. Dosent matter what car your in, theres always an idiot in winter weather, so yea, if your in a brand new car, dont go far.
Buy a cheap *** miata as a beater, youll probably end up selling the solstice though

Try driving your civic with bald tires in the snow. Now thats twice as good as a BMW will be! RWD s()cks!!
Don't get me wrong, rwd in snow are lots of fun! (not for daily transportation)

Yup. just get a really good set of winter tires like WS50's or Hakka II's, and you'll be fine. i drive my S2000 year round in wisconsin.
I spend way too much time on this website

rwd is just as good as fwd...its just that most cars built today come with fwd so most people learn to drive with the predictable nature of fwd....
and feel rwd sucks because they are not use to it

i like my civic's handling. it oversteers when i want it to oversteer, understeers when i don't want it to oversteer. hope that makes sense...
