IS300 or CL-S
is
I just traded my civic in for an IS last week. 01 silver. Test both the manuals and the autos. The civic was a 5 speed. The IS is a 5 speed automatic. I prefer the lexus auto over the lexus manual. It does have e-shift. One may think an electronic manual shifter on the steering wheel is slow. Drive it and try to explain to me how it's slow. It's a personal preference though. I still recommend driving both. Really 'drive' them too. I really think you'll be pleased. No torque steer, smooth ride, powerful. Not blazing fast but a turbo setup can be had for less than a 7th gen. I've read claims that the stock internals can handle 1000 HP. Reliability is nothing to worry about. It's foreign. Nothing goes wrong with foreign cars. And the 01's are still covered for drivetrain. 6 yr/70k. Or is it 7 years? Nope 6. 4/50 bumper to bumper 6/70 drivetrain. 9/unlimited for corrosion.
Winter driving. True. RWD cars, especially ones with 4.3 inches of ground clearance aren't the best in winter. With a decent set of winter tires, heck, even all seasons, you'll be fine. I had a Jag sedan a while back. Aquatread III's in the winter no problem. About the same ground clearance.

Go with the IS300.
The CL-S isn't that fast, also, they're harder to find in the offered 6spd. gearbox. Though I'm sure that'd help making them faster, getting the auto gearbox really slows the hell out of those cars from what I've seen and also, the low resale value (I believe) is owing to the fact that their auto trannies are prone to similar problems that plagued the RL. Also, the CL-S is a good bit more nose-heavy vs the IS300 having good balance. If you look at Solo II classings (http://moutons.org/sccasolo/Lists/2005/stockc.html) the CL (non-type-S I think) is in G-stock competing w. Mazda 3s and Civic Si's. Wheres the IS300 is in D-stock competing w. ITR, Audi S4s and BMW 330Ci's.

IS300.... PRO: 4 doors and the Pimp Factor of owning a Lexus.. haha
Plus, with a decent drop, some 18's and a mild looking lip kit.. it would look hella clean
I'm not really a fan of the CLs... for some reason.. the rear doesn't appeal to me that much.. its kinda awkward lookin IMO

Dude, go with the IS300. First off it's a Lexus,.."pimp" factor alone right there...I guess..and those things look sooooo tight even it being a 4door!
Next, theres this guy that works at some office buy my school, He's got a black Lexus IS300 and it looks soooo donw nice. I dont know what all he has axactly, but just from lookin at it hes got A/M rims..black with chrome lip, a nice deep coffee can exhaust, a bodykit(not sure what kinda but its pretty simple, not too elaborate) and projector headlights.
My point is, those things are TIGHT. Go for the big 300.

Being a former IS300 owner, I would say go for the IS. I'm biased but I think you'll be happier with it in the long run, especially with it's handling and looks. It could naturally use somemore power but that's not hard to get, just buy yourself a Toyomoto header and Y-pipe, SRT intake, and the exhaust of your liking. Being a beautiful car doesn't hurt either.
