I have a 2001 Honda Civic EX and I HAVE DONE SOME SEARCHING to see if I would get any gains from gutting my catalytic converter.I want to know if anyone has done this and has gotten a noticable gain from it.Some people have said you lose back pressure and it makes your exhaust smell bad.I'm not concerned with emissions.I know the CEL would come on,but I also read on the site that removing the negative from the battery for 10-15 seconds would cut the light off?
Can anyone give me some good advise?Any help is greatly appreciated.Thanks.

I think I can fill you in at this, becuase I don't have a catalytic converter. You do get bad smell. You do get some hp 5-6 most. CEL will stay on, either you disconnect your battery, it will come back on.
I just burnt my tongue

gutting a cat is bad cuz u will need to put it back on for smog checks...jus go with a strait pipe which will give u the same effect but with less of a hastle of finding a new cat
i have a 2003 civic ex and replaced my OEM cat with a hi flow cat by Megan Racing. its pretty much a downpipe after the shorty header and replaces the cat. its a 1 piece btw. www.meganracing.com to see a photo of it.
on my car, the mulfunction indicator lamp is always on. during the install, i didnt disconnect the battery though. im not sure but i think you suppose to disconnect the battery before unplugging any sort of electronic. and that goes for the o2 sensors. so when you install, make sure the battery is d/c or prob. end up like me
i tried disconnecting the battery after the install, but it would just come back on after 1-2 days. theirs products out their to eliminate the cel light. i beleive www.bigjoshracing.com has an o2 simulator cut off. which tricks your ecu into thinking you have a valid cat.
as for smell, it smells like polluted gas or some sort of chemical smell when the car is on. but when your moving, you wont smell it sinces its going to the person behind you
. it doesnt smell that bad either, i get used to it.
as for gains, it was probably the best $100 i spent as for performance. i noticed better gains as soon as i installed it. it lets your exhaust flow more freely. but since you want to gut your cat, that may work but no one has ever tried it. so im not sure about gutting the car for better flow. arent you worried about smog emissions though?

no.
no emissions in Louisiana.
So a test pipe is just pipe that goes in the spot of the cat?
I don't think I need another resonator.The cat back I ordered has a resonator.

dam, no emissions? you lucky bastard
the test pipe is a cat converter connected with a downpipe (which is the pipe after and before the cat). its pretty much a high flow pipe eliminating the resonator after the header. but i beleive all exhaust systems have resonators. its the mid piece.. the one after the cat and before the muffler.
what is your goal anyways? most performance? sounds? ???

taken from megan site: "The Megan Racing Hi Flow Catalytic Converter, a test Pipe or Resonator, allows more air flow thru the pipe, resulting in more horse power. The straight-through design is made with stainless steel with a chrome finish and is a direct bolt on."
jx6, if your going for performance and not worrying about emissions or cel lights comming on. you should think about running a straight pipe from your header downpipe to the exhaust/muffler. for our cars, 2.25" would be the best piping size because 2.5" is pretty large for a 1.7L n/a and its gonna be pretty dam loud.
