Supra or Accord?
Ok, I talked to my real dad for the 2nd time in 3 years Wednesday. I told him I thrashed my Cavalier, and asked for a little help, at least finding a car. He said since he missed out on my 16th b-day, he'd just buy me a used one. There are 2 that I'm looking at right now...One's an '89 Supra (stock, non-turbo) with a little over 200,000 miles on it, but in fairly decent condition, the other's a '92 Accord DX with less than 100K in almost perfect condition. The Supra's only $1000, the Accord's $2000, so which would be better for a teenager? I know the Supra will need some work soon, but it's been relatively babied for all of the 200K miles, except one track day. The Accord's last owner was a teenager, so I don't know what's been done to it, but it looks really good...I want the supra cuz...hell, it's a FCKIN' SUPRA, there's nothing better to roll up to school in that I can afford, but I know the accord would last longer...and I could make it look better, with a little money.
WHAT SHOULD I DO????

7mg's are decent motors, but not NA.
If you can't find the MK3 then go for the accord. They're more reliable.

cause i guess people just go out and look for that year of an accord... Easy to break into?
I like the sound of the supra but... I think that accord will be better seeing how it has less mileage.

if i were you, i will get the supra. since you already willing to spend $2k on a used car, get the supra and use rest of the money to tune up or rebuild the engine.

i don't know, but I'm just telling him about my bro's accord, since he was gonna buy the same year and model of the accord...and year does matter, dunno why but I read the top 10 list on msn thing. must be how the locks were made in those years? (guessing)
You all forget that this is a highschool kid. Sorry to say but a supra no matter how old is going to kill you on insurance. Get the accord. More reliable, less miles, cheaper insurance, better gas mileage. The choice is yours though, if you wanna spend the money go for the supra. But it's not the smartest decision considering what you can do with the extra cash and some girls.
glad you spoke to your dad. You should talk with him more often, not just when you need help.
and I agree with:
It'd be great and all to drive a not-so-common car. But in the long run when you have to start driving to other places on a daily basis (like to work, not school), you'd be thankful you're driving a modest and reliable car

Get the Supra. Insurance should't be too expensive as you will most likely only get liability coverage since the car is not worth much. With $1000 it will be more then enough to fix up the engine, but the tranny would be another story if it has problems.
Tje 7M-GTE engine from the Turbo Supra was terrible about blowing head gaskets. Mostly, it came from the fact that the head bolts weren't retorqued... Turns out, doing that basically cures the problem. That, or getting some better head studs...
I owned one for about 9 months... blew the head gasket twice, and I did not beat on it.
That said, repairs on the Supra can be kind of expensive (turbo and non turbo alike). The Accord will probably be the more reliable car, just by nature of the fact that its 3 years newer.
If you're only getting liability insurance, I don't think it will matter which car you get.
If I were doing it again, I'd buy that Accord and drive it into the ground. Get a great job and buy yourself a car you really want after a couple of years.
I took that Supra as a hand me down from my dad, who babied it. My rationale (and his) was that it was a better car than something new. Well, it was cooler, nicer, etc. It wasn't as reliable, durable, etc...
Just my .02 worth.
