Keeps you out of VTEC (if so-equipped) but keeps your RPMs high enough to keep from lagging. That is, unless you're going uphill.
We have stage 2 vtec which engages depending how hard you push the gas pedal i'd say you take that back

My standard autocross launch is 3700 RPM. I get 10-15 feet before I hit the timing lights, so its wise to have the revs as high as possible when you hit them ( stupid torqueless engine). I don't drop it, just feather it off... figure they spin for 5 or so feet and I hit the lights about 3500-4K RPM if I get away clean. In the rare event that the first straight is long enough to redline out, I usually don't anyways.... max HP is 6100, max TQ is 5500. Shifting at 6100 drops the revs to about 5300, I'll usually go by sound anyways... The intake resonates at 6000, so I'll shift about a second after I hear the sound change (its about 6400)
Driving normal.. I shift when ever I feel like it. The better the mood, the higher I usually go, but no higher than 4500 usually. Just lollygaging in traffic... maybe 3500.

I shift when smoke starts to come out of the engine. Well not right away. Only once I can smell it. Before you can smell it, it's not that bad. Around 9000rpm or so I guess.

for just driving around i usually shift around 3.5k and if i am merging into traffic off an on-ramp or sumtin similar then i will usually shift around 4,300-4,500........there is no reason to go over that unless ur are racing.

Usually 3500 for economy purposes.

Shift points vary with different cars - A car with a bigger engine and a lower redline (prob longer gears) can obviously shift a lot lower because it will get the same power at much lower rpm. Our cars have zilch as far as low end power and a fairly short first gear, so we have to leave it in gear until a higher rpm in order to get moving.
