when do you shift??
Hey
I was just wondering when you guys shift (what RPM), when you drive fuel economically. Cuz' like, people always tell me to shift at really low RPMs but then I was taught by my dad to not have your RPMs drop below 2,000. And when I drive his bimmer it has that lil gauge thing that tells you how much gas your wasting.. and when i shift low while still accelerating and like have the RPMs go below 2,000 the needle points to like like 10mpgs and stuff like that. I hope this was kind of clear but iono.. just curios of how you guys shift.

fuel economy? what's that? I usually shift around 5k (non Vtec)
Nah but really, if I'm hurtin for gas money I usually shift around 3500-4000 and not drive like an a$$hole. "Drive it like you stole it" - That's me

3- 4K usually, unless I'm trying to hall *** on the freeway. I heard 3,000 for the best fuel economy. I've noticed a difference at higher RPM's.
I shifted at 3k. If you read the manual, it tells you what MPH to shift at for best fuel economy. I rarely ever went over 3k RPM unless I was getting out of the way, needed the torque, or just having a little fun.

I have an HX so...
1st Gear I stay in till about 3500-5000
2nd Gear, 4000
Then I just go to 4th...
For freeway, same, but shift to 3rd, then 5th when I hit 4K in 3rd.

When my friend taught me how to drive he told me to shift between 2000 and 3000 rpms.... I guess he was wrong?
But perhaps he was only referring to starting from a dead stop then getting into 1st gear.

Geez some of you peeps really rev your engines up there.. to each is own I suppose.
FWIW here's what our Owner's Manual says:
Drive in the highest gear that lets the engine run and accelerate smoothly. This will give you the best fuel economy and effective emissions control. The following shift points are recommended:
Shift up/Normal Acceleration
1st to 2nd/15 mph (24 km/h)
2nd to 3rd/27 mph (43 km/h)
3rd to 4th/39 mph (63 km/h)
4th to 5th/53 mph (85 km/h)
Shift up/Cruise from Acceleration
1st to 2nd/9 mph (14 km/h)
2nd to 3rd/20 mph (32 km/h)
3rd to 4th/33 mph (53 km/h)
4th to 5th/48 mph (77 km/h)
I'm assuming what Honda means Normal acceleration is from a dead stop and Cruise from Acceleration is when your already rolling.. dunno.
For me I just shift from 3000 to 3500 rpms unless I need to accelerate faster.

One important rule would be never rev or drive your engine too high or aggresive when you first buy the car (0-6000km). It still needs to be broken in and if you drive the sh*t out of it, it will deteriate your engine quicker and deposit metal shards in your engine!!!

if I still want to drive kinda fast or whatever, but I still want to save some gas I usually shift about 5.5... like yesterday when I got lost and was trying to get back to school on time and the gas light came on...

ys, i usually dont worry abut fuel economy. i just shift around 3k-4k on a normal basis, there is no real reason to go higher unless you are trying to merge or go fast or something.
id like to throw in that: domestic cars are different....more torque so autos shift around 2k when going moderate.
but for our civics usually an optimal point is 3-4k atleast for me it feels best this way.
