4. heel-toe downshifting

haha, i just noticed i listed them in order of difficulty (4 being the hardest)

i can do 1 and 2 with no problem but 3 i need to work on my shifting speed (i think a short shifter would help) and 4 the car still jerks a bit... i need to get it perfect before i actually use it to enter corners....

i've had my car since june 01 and i love stick and haven't gotten tired of it! sometimes its a pain during traffic but i don't mind...

You should try Heel-toe shifting while in the middle of a corner, like where youre suppose to. It's really not that hard, you essentialy want to be back in the lower gear at the apex of the corner so you can accelerate out. Its like doing a littel dance, step 1. on the brake. step two turn in to corner. step 3. push in clutch. step 4. "Tap" the gas with your heel (while your still on te brake) step 5. down shift and release the brake step 6. pass apex and accelerate out of the corner. its that easy just 6 simple steps!!!

But seriously, Heel-toe shifting is a pain in the *** to get right. but once you learn, its probably the most fun you'll ever have with a manual transmission.

I drive manual, but when we reach a certain age i'm sure we'll give up the "stick" and switch to automatic and start yelling at young kids driving too fast on the street.

Just because a civic's not that fast, doesn't mean you can't have fun with it. I have loads of fun in my civic. Shifting at 6500 RPM brings such joy. If there's an open stretch of a windy road, I love punching the throttle.

As far as stop-and-go traffic being a pain, its not, because driving manual becomes so second nature that you don't really notice it (unless you're in a very hilly area). Oakland is one of the worst for traffic, and I still would never want to go back to auto. Only time I wished for an auto was when I was parrallel parking on a steep hill.

I got my auto civic cause the wife can't drive standard. I wish I had a manual car, but that'll be the next purchase, once the civic is paid off.

actually, its better to turbo an lx because it has a lower compression than the ex and also the vtec (not "vtech") makes tuning harder...

why does VTEC makes tuning a turbo harder?

oh yeah, auto EX...it's ok, but it's too boring and slow for me...but I'm stuck with it for the moment, I compensate by having fun with my girlfriend and my free hand, hehehe!

I agree. It's not the hardest thing to learn and it is fun.

IMO, left foot braking is the hardest thing to learn. First time I did it, I couldn't get my foot off the brake until the car completely stopped.

The difference in compression is not that significant. 9.5:1 (DX/LX) Vs 9.9:1 (HX/EX).

They loaned me a Civic auto when they installed my armrest and it was a total dog compared to my manual. The Civic just does not have the torque to be even remotely quick with an auto. The manual is fun during passing and even stop light to stop light. When it comes to Civics I'll take a manual!

i traded my auto for a manual from this kid... ever since then we became friends and he is the on that has the gx pistons with the mods to support them... he claims 180 (doubtful) with gx pistons, p/p 3 angle valve job, gude cam, bored tb, (mods like spider883) unorthodox pulley, aem cam gear. he is not a member but he is certainly copying his mods. i should really tell him to be a member of this site.

Get off of 880. :P Take 580. It's way curvier, no 18 wheelers are allowed on it, it's a LOT clearer an and has a LOT less cops on it.

a lot of people have trouble with the part where you tap the gas.
when this method was created, gas padals where usually bolted from the top, so the bottom of the pedal is what swung. now they are attached from the bottom or the back, so they dont move as easily when your heel is pressing them, it doesnt seem to fall in the right place...

so what i do is just get high on the brake, then tilt my foot to the right and use my toes on the top of the gas pedal. now i find this very easy, because i have long wide feet, so the pedals are all in reach... i dunno, i know i just had trouble heel-toeing at first, then i was taught to try it backwards.

and about the double clutching, you are talking about the right thing i think... -gas, +clutch, +neutral, -clutch, +gas, -gas, +clutch, +gear, -clutch, +gas... right? (i ask because people commonly misconcieve dbl clutching as a depressiong of the clutch within gears to raise rpms.) I used to get really messed up on this one... I dont know that a short throw shifter would help. my dad has a f250 super duty deasel, and it has like a 2 foot throw in the shifter, i dbl clutch it when i drive it, and i think its easier in that than in my civic. its all in the technique and timing.

I'm a manual driver. The only downside is the stop and go traffic....from 1st, to 2nd, then back to 1st but I still love it.

Kew, it's about time an auto even broke 15s.

Good bolt ons (especially a header) with clutch and flywheel upgrade + a good driver will put a manual in 15s.

Manual & i LOVE it!! Traffic isn't that bad. I drive all around from San Franscisco to San Jose. I hate SF, though; when you're uphill & stopped & have a $100,000+ car at your rear bumper, it's worry i could do without!!
