I know my car doesn't have vtec but does anyone else know what this could be? My car is stock btw.
Our cars have like no low end torque & dont make much power till higher up, like 5k. Almost feels like a turbo when your used to driving in low rpms all the time

dood I don't know but I think it happens with most in line 4s with a high rev. I mean I start off slow in first gear but after about 4k I juice like I rocket.. and I noticed the same thing in my girlfriends old miata.. (she has a 99 civic dx now) it was like I was a turlte throughout the lower half and a rabbit on the upper rpms..

Is driving above 4k rpms all the time bad for the car?

In a non-VTEC motor, that boost you feel with increased rpm is from the cam. Our sewing machines have a cam that makes power further up the rev range (starting in the 3-4k range). Most cams have a 2.5-3k rpm window where they are most efficient and make the most torque. Where that torque range sits dictates how your engine will feel. Move the torque range down and it will jump off the line then fall flat on its face (like a diesel). Move it up in the range and you have an Yamaha F1. Our cars have no low end becuase they're cammed to make power higher in the rev range.

My Mach 1 has to have a 3500 stall speed converter to get past the dead zone to where the cam comes alive. I have to slip my clutch with the civic for the same reason.

No. it's bad for the engine if you keep it running constantly near the redline. 4k isn't that high but you sound like you'd be going quite fast in 5th gear.

If you want low-end power get boost or get lightweight 15s. Get a lighter flywheel and an upgraded clutch. There's not much you can do. Bolt-on engine mods are made to improve top-end power. The more mods, the more low-end you'll sacrifice.
