Vtec...

Iam sure this is a repost or a post that may get some heavy critism, but I figure hey, whats this forum here for if you can't use it? right?

So anyways on with my story...

Recently, and I dunno if its just me paying more attention now to my car because of the many recent dealership visits, or just because I really never gave it any thought, but I have been noticing the "vtec" actually kicking in on my car. Now I am not saying it is a full-on whiplash, tire spinning, gut wrenching, shuv of torque like many claim it to be, but it seems right as i approach the 2.6-3.4 rpm range almost right before my car runs outta breath to shift (and im talking about normal easy street driving style shifting at about 3.5rpm) the engine gives off alittle extra shuv that I didn't notice driving my g/f's LX the other day... Its wierd... and very hard to describe using text...

Anyone know what I am talking about? Or is it just me...

No kidding... I know that... The point I am trying to make is if Vtec is actually noticable on EX models... or if anyone else notices it...

Its the same way in my SI. Not much, but it is noticeable. Plus you can hear it a little with my intake.

How does everyone feel about the 115HP DX/LX compared to the 127HP EX. I don't know if it matters but I was reading a pamphlet at the dealership and they rate the engines at different RPM levels. This is decieving to me. I don't know about you guys but I think an LX and an EX wouldn't get any leads on each other in a race as long as the drivers were both skilled.

Yea I know what you are talking about. It happens when I give it about half throddle around 2.5k-3.5k, it just starts to pick up a little bit without giving it extra gas. Also if I floor it from a start itll bog out till about 3k then rev up & take off quite fast(for a 4 banger civic of course), a little more so then my 6th gen LX so maybee thats the VTEC also, I dunno.

There really isn't alot of difference in horsepower between the Lx and Ex. The big thing is that you get a few more goodies like sunroof option and more power stuff. The other thing you get is Vtec. The Lx models do not have Vtec. If you have a choice, get the Ex. Trust me, you won't be dissappointed.

My friends say they can feel it kick in with the intake but I can't.

I don't care so long as the car is launched around 4,000 RPMs.

how is it decieving??

The LX happens to make it's max power at a different RPM then the EX, that's all, 115 and 127 is very close, so without even thinking about RPM's and stuff, the race will be very close, if the ex messes up on one shift, the LX will probably take advantage of it.

It really pretty much driver skill with alittle advantage to the Ex. I have taken a few Lx autos with ease but never got to line up against an Lx manual...i would just get the Ex for the sun roof

I tested the difference myself.

As i stated earlier my g/f (now my X) owns a completly stock 2002 LX Auto Sedan. I have the same exact car expect its an EX. We both are not into "racing" so racing to us is stomping the pedal from a stop...

Anyways...

We did three runs, and in all three events my EX pulled ahead about 1/2 car lenghts towards the end of 2nd gear...

1st gear we were about even and each time we "raced" her LX seemed to rev higher then my EX, which struck me as odd... But again as we hit second the EX would start to pull away from the LX and we both would shut down at about 65 (in a 45mph zone) with the EX ending almost a full car lengths ahead of her.. not quite tho..

As for the driver factor, we switched cars and I drove the LX on the 3rd round... ending up with same results...

So in a nutshell the EX isn't that much faster then the LX. But in a direct match-off of equally stock engines, with equally talanted drivers, the EX would prevail...

Just some food for thought...

I've been in a 99 civic ex, and you can hear and feel when the vtec engages. It's actually lower at 3500 rpms, compared to the new vics at around 4500. Also, they made the new engines so vtec is silent.

I have a question for you guys. I have a dx(manual) and just today I was entering the freeway very quickly. I was looking at my tach the whole time and it was slow as hell until it reached 5k rpms, and then all of a sudden I felt a small but very noticable kick. After 5k the car seemed to come alive. I know my car doesn't have vtec but does anyone else know what this could be? My car is stock btw.
