2016 Civic EX: Converting from Halogen Headlights to LED

My 2016 Civic EX originally had halogen lights, but I found they weren’t very bright enough, so I recently put in LED lights that are compatible with my car. However, I later discovered that there are different headlight housings, so I currently have LED lights in a housing meant for halogen lights. Though they seem brighter, they don’t work as well as they should. I’m assuming I will either need to get the proper housing or an adaptor.

If I go the new housing route, what will I need to accomplish this, and how do I ensure the lights are at the proper angle? Currently, I have Sylvania high beams, and Sylvania low beams in my car, so would getting the housing be enough?

Would someone more knowledgeable be able to guide me through this? Please keep in mind that I know next to nothing about cars. Thanks in advance😁

  1. Check if there are any compatible housing that you can swap
  2. do a retrofit
link is a for a different generation, but... similar process.

or call/email the retrofit source

Re: 2016 Civic EX: Converting from Halogen Headlights to LED

If you want to swap in the Touring model LED headlights, you'll have to get a conversion harness, then install load resistors so your turn signals don't hyperflash. Here's a conversion harness I found. Don't know how good they are, but gives you an idea of what you have to buy in addition to the headlights themselves, if you opt for the OEM route.

with regards to @sdaidoji and his recommendation for a retrofit, theretrofitsource does have a retrofit kit for the 10thgen, and I have a DIY guide laid out if you want to go that route. The light output for a retrofit blows halogens and OEM LEDs out of the water.

If you're set on the LED assemblies, TRS also makes a PnP set for WAAAAAYYYY cheaper than OEM assemblies, complete with PnP harness and load resistors installed. I mean, they'll still run you $615+shipping, but it's an option

Re: 2016 Civic EX: Converting from Halogen Headlights to LED

Thank you very much! You’ve both been very helpful. I looked around and found the LED housing at a scrap yard, but I was unaware that I’d need other stuff to make it work correctly, so thanks for saving me from that mistake. I’m sure it would have been a hassle 😅

I’ve decided to go with the retrofit option. My only questions are:

1) Will it come with the bulbs, or can I use the LED high and low beams I’ve already purchased and installed?

2) Will I need to get the lights adjusted/calibrated to the proper angle, or can I do that myself? If so, is it an easy task for someone who knows next to nothing about cars?

3) Is there a tutorial on how to install this retrofit housing?

Thanks again for all of your help! ☺️

Re: 2016 Civic EX: Converting from Halogen Headlights to LED

1) if you go the full retroquik kit route (here's a direct link to the kit), you can choose bulbs to add on as part of the kit (some opt for no bulbs because you can opt for bulbs from other sources if you so desired). If you don't know the difference between the bulb colors (4000K, 5000K, and 6000k offered), I'll give you some insight. The white light spectrum is really yellow->white->blue->purpleish. Lower values will be closer to yellow, higher closer to the purpleish side. OEM HIDs from the likes of Mercedes Benz, Lexus, BMW, Audi, Acura, etc., all tend to be around 4250K. Pure white sunlight on a bright sunny day is usually around 5000k. 6000k you'll start to see a blue/teal-ish hue to the white color. I like to stick to 5000k.
As far as high beams go, I personally went with the high beam splitter option, so one set of wires goes to the HID projector, and the other set to my OEM high beam bulb, in which I installed LED bulbs. What that means for me is activation of my high beams both drops the cutoff shield in the HID projector and illuminates my LED high beam bulbs. Me flashing my high beams is stupidly bright. When I get home, I can post up some comparison shots of OEM to retrofit so you can see what the difference is like. My work network blocks imgur, otherwise I'd do it now.

2) adjustment is definitely a DIY-able task (see step 22 in my DIY guide). If you want to get it as close as possible before driving in the dark before adjustment, here's what I recommend: park your car and do not move it until you're done with install. Turn on your OEM lights and use masking tape to see where the OEM cutoff is prior to taking anything apart. Do the entire retrofit. Install the lights on the car (before reinstalling your bumper). Adjust the new retrofitted light beams to the masking tape marks you put on the wall (or as close as you can). That way, you'll at least be close and not blinding people when you drive around to whatever flat wall you decide to use to truly aim the lights.

3) yep. https://www.civicforums.com/forums/2...eadlights.html
There are links to other DIY guides, too, that have far more pics than I took

edit: lots more and more accurate information.

Here, xRiceboix made these for his 2002 civic (I bought from him - it's on my 2002 civic that did not have HID bulbs from factory)

Re: 2016 Civic EX: Converting from Halogen Headlights to LED

no lie, I wish doing an aftermarket shroud with the ability to do the hidden "halo" was as easy to do on the 10thgen as it was the 7th.

Re: 2016 Civic EX: Converting from Halogen Headlights to LED

Thanks for all the info 😲 I ordered these. Would these be compatible with those lights, or were those meant to upgrade my current stock housing?

Re: 2016 Civic EX: Converting from Halogen Headlights to LED

Those will be straight up plug and play with your stock setup. Nothing extra needed other than aiming them.

Literally
  1. Take off bumper
  2. Unplug/unbolt/remove headlights
  3. Install/connect new headlights
  4. Put on new bumper
  5. Aim new headlights
  6. Happy dance.
I'd still recommend parking your car and marking the factory cutoff on your wall/garage with masking tape so you can get ballpark aiming done before you drive off

edit: for clarification, those are complete assembly replacements. Straight up drop in install. If you did a retrofit like in my(and the other) guide(s), they would look identical to stock with the lights off, but the light pattern and output would out perform stock halogens by far

Re: 2016 Civic EX: Converting from Halogen Headlights to LED

I think I understand, thank you 😃

Would the selections I’ve made be enough, or will I need the other optional ones as well? And if I order the lights, will it come with both the high beam bulbs as well as the low beam bulbs. I’m not exactly sure what HID are. Sorry for all the questions, I just wanna make sure I get everything I need.

Re: 2016 Civic EX: Converting from Halogen Headlights to LED

I would recommend emailing or calling them, they are quite fast to respond, a day or 3...
I had not even bought from them and they answered my questions
So I bought stuff for my other cars as well as thank you

HID different than LED, you don't need HID hardware

from google:
What does HID mean light?

High Intensity Discharge
What is a High Intensity Discharge (HID) Light: High Intensity Discharge is an overarching term for a gas-discharge light. They are the oldest type of electrical light Among the common types of HID lights are mercury vapor, low and high pressure sodium and metal halide lamps.
