Horrible User Interface with control panel
Horrible User Interface with control panel
Hello EveryBody ...!! This is my very FIRST post. I am a Canadian from Kelowna, BC. One thing I must point out is that i simply LOVE Hondas. And specifically I love Honda Civics. I need TWO hands to count how many Hondas that I have owned in my lifetime ... and I may even need a third hand .... as I really have lost count. And the majority of them were Civics.
But .. My 2018 Honda Civic has only ONE issue that I cannot stand .. and makes me really .. REALLY hesitant on buying another Civic in the Future. And that is when one plays with the digital control panel. It is simply PAINFUL. And when one goes that extra step to hook up one's iPhone .. to get interfacing with one's cell .. then the problems are compounded EVEN more... !!! It connects ... sometimes .. and sometimes not ... then I have to pull out the charge wire and re-insert it again and again ... Instead of the plug in wire, ... BlueTooth sometimes works sometimes not ... again .... P A I N F U L .... !!!!
I am certainly NOT a complainer .. but rather a person that ADAPTS to situations ... and then ACCEPTS things as such ... But this problem ... which ISN'T MY problem but rather a Honda Problem that is NOW MY problem ... because I BOUGHT the problem ... is just far too annoying to NOT point out ... !!!
So, .. I am one that simply TELLS the TRUTH .... PERIOD. My conclusion is that the Honda Civic User Interface of the Control panel is sooo painful that it makes the driving experience simply not pleasant .... And my daughter and son both have new civics and this is a problem across the board .. not just with my civic ...
Once I actually GET the music to play from my (newer) iPhone .. to stream thru the Civic's speaker system .. then I am already 19 minutes into my ride anywhere ... getting groceries .. going to the golf course ...etc ... and then the riding experience is pretty much over since I reached my destination with perhaps only listening to ONE or TWO songs max... ... So, .. here comes my final analysis of each road trip ---> ANNOYING !!!!!
Now, .. just to add ONE last thing about vehicles ... I have a 2013 Mazda 6 and whenever I climb into this car, .. the bluetooth is INCREDIBLE ... and interface with one's cell is FLAWLESS and PAIN-free. and this car is headed to the 10 year mark (meaning an older car).
Jus Sayin ....
So, .. the point of my new posting is to SHARE my experience with other Civic owners ... By the way, .. my 21 year old son with his new (bluish grey) Civic and my 24 yr old daughter with her white Civic are pretty much identical cars except one is a manual stick and the other is automatic ... and BOTH of my adult kids say that this interface issue of the control panel is PAINFUL to them as well ... !!! And youngsters are usually REALLY good at computer things ... and thus, .. it isn't "me" .. !!! This user interface problem is a HONDA CIVIC problem pure and simple.

Don’t know what to tell you. I have had four Hondas that I have used Bluetooth with and always worked just fine, Two with Carplay. You diid not say what Civic trim level you have or what iPhone. That info might help in understanding. You might go to an Apple store and see if they will help you troubleshoot the problem. I doubt a Honda dealer would in general be of any help.

I have found that to enjoy my ride in my new (high end, leather seats, fully trimmed out) Hondas (I call all the cars in my family "my" cars since I pay for them, even thought my kids are now adults and drive them as their own...) one has to spend a few moment .., minutes actually ,,, before one puts the car in reverse then drive out of the driveway. And let's face it ... nobody does that ....
I have an older Mazda 6 that when I climb in to , start the engine, ... and be on my way ... and the way my iPhone INSTANTANEOUSLY interfaces with the car is amazing. It just WORKS. There is zero frustration, no dropped audio music problems, no .. w a i t i n g ... for an album or an artist or a song to load, etc ... like in a new Honda Civic.

there are some cases that you need to get the updates to your phone to make it work well. Usually the issue is on the phone side if they don't connect well

Re: Horrible User Interface with control panel
I retrofitted a 2021 touchscreen head unit into my 2018 Sport Hatch (came with the 5" non-touchscreen color audio) and have had nothing but positive experiences. I decided to retrofit the touchscreen because I wanted to take advantage of Android Auto as well as other Android head unit compatible apps (e.g. KTuner Lite).
I have an android, and I have the same procedure I've followed since I've had my car:
Only time I mess with the touchscreen interface is when I wanna change the display screen to the fuel economy meter (since it shows current drive fuel economy). Sure, getting it all set up to function how I wanted it took some figuring out, but it was literally a one-time, 10-minute process in my driveway. It was only 10 minutes because I installed Honda Hack, as well, so I could re-map some of my steering wheel buttons to how I wanted (and install some fancy startup videos). The OEM steering wheel source button didn't do anything anymore, so I mapped it to turn on my backup cam when I tap it, and clear head unit cache when I push and hold the source button. Also re-mapped a few other buttons to function when I push and hold, but that's neither here nor there.
I guess I should mentioned that with as many complaints I've seen regarding the 10th gen civic, I've had zero of any aforementioned issues. *knocks on wood*

- Plug my phone in (but now it's plugged into the head unit USB instead of a cigarette lighter adapter charger)
- Put my phone in the Ram X-grip mount I installed
- Start my car
- Android Auto automatically starts my Pandora station without fail (Bluetooth previously automatically connected and also started my Pandora without fail).

Hmmm, .. that is interesting. Zero issues, .. eh? I am jealous. By the way, the Hondas in my family are both 2018 (or are they 2019 ? .. I bought them in the summer of 2018, anyways). So, technically they are a couple years old. But both of them have the issues of lousy iPhone interfacing, reported by three adults with up to date cell phones etc. So, it ain't the phones. And it ain't the operators ... That leaves just one thing: the lousy Honda digital screen & associated software. It is painful ... really it is... I would love to upload a video clip of my climbing into the Honda, .. starting the car, .. then attempting to try two play music from one of my playlists.. and then wait ... then wait ... then friggin' hopefully the music comes on ... but it won't ... not for awhile anyway ....
Then compare to climbing into my Mazda ... then doing the EXACT same thing ... the video clip of the latter would be seconds. The video clip involving the Hondas would be like 15 or 20 minutes long ....

Thanks for your reply. ... I guess it is all about consumer experience. For me, it is all about simplicity, I need to climb in my vehicle ... and be on my way without fussing with ***** or digital screen without having to pull over to navigate the audio experience.

Again I don’t know what your problem is and you did not offer any new info as to what iPhone you have or if you use Carplay or if you think going to an Apple store and seeking help would something you will do. It sounds more like you want somebody to solve your problem without you having anything to do yourself. Maybe you should just trade your Honda in on a new Mazda since they do what you want.🙄
