Slippin' and Slidin' away...

Yeah, I went out tonight at 8:00PM and got home around 11:45PM. The roads were bad. Very poor visibility. I think my windshield wipers suck or something. I had the heat on and the A/C on and the rear windshield defroster on. This haze was building up on the inside of my windshields. I had to stop on the side of the road for a bit to clear that crap off with my hand. Not to mention that I had to use a scraper to de-ice all of my windows. No use de-icing my side mirrors though; they were totally frozen.

Anyway, 50mph on the highway in the middle lane. 25mph on the off-ramps. Three tries getting up my drivway. I finally did it though. I imagine this is as bad as it'll get. I passed the test, so I'm keepin' my rims and tires on for the winter. For now... I need a scraper though. Plus some de-icer for the side mirrors.

hey grey,

i dont think the problem is with sliding that might happen if you keep your rims on for the winter. everyone tells me that the salt that they put on the roads will eat away at your finish. i wanted to keep my rims on for the winter also just cause its such a pain to change them all back, plus its cold...but i dont wanna ruin brand new rims just cause im lazy.

How about this..

A friend of mine got a brand new Hyundai Elantra GT this past Tues. She brings it by my gf's place tonight to show it off. We were gonna head to the mall, so she lets me drive it. We're on the highway and (for those who know how I drive) I dont push it too hard. Not my car and it hasnt been broken in yet. Took it to maybe 80 once or twice to pass, but kept it mainly at 60 or so. So I'm in the middle lane, and they tell me kinda late that I should get off at the upcoming exit. I had enough time though, signaled, and started turning off. The turn was coming in kinda fast (I was probably coasting at around 45-50mph) so I brake a bit to slow down. I'm about 30 ft from the exit and the brakes lock up. So I let off the brake. Nothin. I keep turning slowly to the right, but I'm still going straight. All I'm thinking of at this point is, "$hit. This is her brand new car and I'm about to jump the corner." At this point, everything was going in slow motion but it only lasted like 3 seconds. I think the left front tire hit curb and the car shoots to the right. Now I'm heading at a 45 degree angle towards the inner corner and the inner corner has a guardrail. Now Im thinking "Now I'm definitely gonna smash her car." I start turning left as fast as I can and somehow, either the tires grip or I hit the inside curb with the right front tire and the car straightens out. I park at the Wendy's right off the exit and look for damage. Only thing I see is possibly some scuffing on the tires. Nothing else. Phew. And here's the killer...they told me to get off at the wrong exit.

All in all, it was all good. As weird as this sounds, I was in total control. I wasnt even nervous. The blood started pumping just a bit afterwards thinking about what coulda happened, but it only lasted like 5 seconds. Its kinda cool knowing I could handle a situation like that.

gray, you have beautiful rims, it would be a shame to have the salt distroy them. if you dont change them im going to sneak down to your house one night and do it while you sleep!! <j/k>.

Krepoort, you sound like you have the blood of a rally driver. I should let you do a few stages in my GTX!

Dang yo, it doesn't take that much to pull em off! I'd do it if I had wheels

Grey - lol, I didn't even bother trying to get up your driveway on Sat when I dropped off the cake...freakin took me 5 minutes just to walk up the driveway without falling on my face!

Krepoort - lucky man! Good thing you watched those two episodes of Inital D, right?

GREY - we should have that breaking meet before things get nasty bro...besides, everyone can learn how to use the e-brake for quick turns...

Well, I don't care if it ruins the finish. I'll be repainting my rims anyway since I banged them into a curb and they're kinda scratched up and what not. I'll be sure to use lots of clearcoat too, so I should be okay for future winters. We'll see how things turn out this winter though. I'm more concerned about the lack of winter tires. Hell, all-season tires would be better than what I have. Wait, maybe even the stock firestones would be better.

Yeah, we should do that braking thing. I don't know of an empty parking lot though. I wish I did. Anyone know of one we could use?

Yeah, that's not in MA though. I forget if it's in NH or in CT? It depends on how far away it is. If it's close enough, then I'de go. Why not...

Yeah, I felt bad when you left my place as it was icing like a **** out. I should have just gave you the ice scraper just in case you needed it on the way home (which you did....). I'm glad you made it up that driveway though... I was concerned about that too.... Gotta admit though, Gone in 60 seconds is a damn good movie.........
