CAI and Hydrolocking
i had an short ram intake with an heat shield and when driving on the highway over thick water puddles, water splash onto my engine bay. i didnt notice this until the next morning when i popped open my hood and saw left over water marks on my chrome heatshield around the intake filter.
So I'm getting the feeling that I should go with an SRI instead of a CAI for my car... here in Florida when it rains it's like an effin monsoon. Lots of water and lots of puddles.
I guess though, the things I don't understand: does it really depend on where exactly the filter fits in the car? Are we just talking about the times it actually gets submerged and soaked with water? I mean, how deep a puddle would you have to hit to submerge it?!
I have never seen a car with a cold air in it so I just don't know where the thing goes... not knowing really anything about it, I would guess that if it hangs below the bumper it would be bad... but if you could mount it up a little and inside the bumper so that it still gets air but can't be soaked then it would be ok. What about water repellent pre filters? Surely those would stop water in the air (as in rain drops hitting it) from getting through.
I'm a newb though so I have no idea... I don't want to kill my engine though... need my car for work.

digitaldemigod, i was in your shoes about 2 months ago, let me tell you what decided:
1 HP is not woth risking your engine.
if you want to see what a CAI looks like and where it goes, go to page 2. those are the steps i took to remove the CAI, i posted it so that newbs like us don't have to get hassled by car gurus.

Yeah, I agree, it's not worth risking the engine. I love my car and I need my car. Without it I can't work or get my kid to school... so Short Ram it is! =)
Now... AEM or K&N...
yea the filter was pretty low down there. it was alittle higher than the bottom of the front pumper, so it's like on the engine compartment border. i'm happy with AEM, i havn't seen or driven in a car that had K&N.

I've been looking at both their sites and it looks like the K&N is only .5 hp more powerful.
I know it's stupid to say this, but I want it to be red... if K&N doesn't make a red sri, then I'm going with AEM. =) I don't want to paint anything.
short ram folks!
if you want real performance, at the track...remove the hood and the sri will be getting a good load of air
perfect for daily driver and track days *i wonder if the track lets you do that hrm?*

a little off topic, has anyone ever had problems with their short ram intake and water/rain?
was driving the civic with the short ram on the highway with heavy rain, opened the hood, splashes of water on my battery and air filter piece...luckily, i have a home made heat shield piece to block off some. but im a little worried
