Please Help! d16z6 crank but no start

Please Help! d16z6 crank but no start
OK so I have a 94 eg with d16z6 all stock obd1. Car has given me a few issues since I've owned it, replaced head gasket twice, second time replaced head with used one, ever since I've had a valve tick and an occasional misfire. Thinking it was my timing, I checked the tb thinking maybe I was off some teeth, but it's in time so I proceeded to adjust the valves, 0.08 intake 0.10 exhaust and still ticks and putts ocassionally missing and acting a little funny at an idle, but will smooth out around 2500 rpms. But that's not even the issue now. Either way it would still start up and run EVERY time before I started messing. So with the car warmed up I tried retarding/advancing the dizzy to see if that helped my tick/misfire, not really so I set it back in the middle and reset my ecu. Started right up but still ticking and putting, so I went and messed with the idle screw, turning it up made the problem a little less noticeable but didn't seem to take care of it, so I tried turning it down. Ended up turning it down too far and killed the motor. So I turned the screw back out a little bit and when i went to start. Nothing! So I figured the ecu must have sensed it was out of fuel or that the idle was too low so I reset the ecu again and still nothing. after cranking a few times it seems to be firing on say 1 and 3 but not on all 4 so it won't start up. Pulled fuel lines, it's getting fuel. Checked spark and it's good, like I said it was running sorta ok before I starved it with the idle screw. Please help! I've tried everything, I don't know what I did but it's starting to make me crazy! Just cannot figure out what could have happened that couldnt be a quick fix, just by starving it of air/ fuel. Any help is greatly appreciated!

hold the gas pedal to the floor and try to start it. Maybe (unlikely) you flooded the engine with the engine running with limited airflow and now the cylinders have an over rich fuel mix in them with wet plugs.

Some MPI cars are kinda picky about getting flooded. Usually when they get badly fuel flooded they will crank fast with very little compression sound.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking, after excessive cranking I'm sure that it's flooded now. When I first killed it I tried starting and it would fire like it wanted to go but not start and then just got progressively worse, not firing, sounds like loss of compression.
So if I hold the pedal to the floor it stops putting fuel through the injectors? Was thinking of pulling the fuel pump fuse and cranking some more with plugs out to try to push out the raw fuel. But still confused as to why it immediately wouldn't start after messing with the idle, even after setting it back to where it was, resetting the ecu and before I cranked it way too much.

Re: Please Help! d16z6 crank but no start

If it is indeed flooded it was flooded at the moment that it stalled. That is why it would not restart immediately afterwards.

Holding the vehicles gas pedal down all the way tells the pcm to enter "flood clear" mode. While the pedal is floored none of the injectors will squirt fuel into the ports. And yes with normal cranking and repeated attempts to start it will continue to add fuel even though it can not burn what is already in the cylinder. Don't pull the fuel pump fuse on some cars it powers other things as well.

On extreme cases in the past I have had to use a blow gun to air out the cylinders and cleaned all the plugs with a small butane torch. That was on a car that had stalled out after getting 10 gallons of diesel into the gas tank.

Funny story about car getting flooded. My brother had this happen to his hyundai around 3 months ago. It was an old tired beaten up car. It failed to start following some unfixed electrical problems. He needed a car that he could rely on and I convinced him to buy a 2015 honda fit. A couple weeks later I went over to his house while he was at work to take a look. Got in, turned car, thought to myself "I know this sound," held the gas pedal down and 40 seconds later there is a large cloud of fuel smoke in front of his house and the car is idling fine. I didn't tell him I had done anything with it, but I did move it about 50 farther up his driveway. He was kinda annoyed, but now is driving a good car with a warranty.

Re: Please Help! d16z6 crank but no start

Alright I will try and report back. I just hope I didn't cause some other damage somewhere else by killing it like that. But the idle screw is only controlling AIR flow at an idle, so cutting off air just allowed it to keep dumping in fuel right? and that's why it was immediately flooded? Just seems odd that it would still fire on a couple cylinders, and only fires when I first turn the key, if i crank for a few seconds it doesn't fire at all. I kept switching on and off rapidly and it just about started up, i was so close but still not quite there. I know with every crank it just got worse dumping in more fuel tho, but at the same time I know I had spark so i just didn't get it. I was pumping the gas but not holding it wide open, so I'll give that a try and see where I end up. Thanks for the help man

Re: Please Help! d16z6 crank but no start

Still nothing. Cranked with pedal to the floor for about 2 mins, not a whimper. So I pulled the injectors out and jumped the starter to see if they were squirting and yes its getting fuel. But they still squirt even with WOT so I put them back in and just disconnected them from the harness so they wouldn't open while cranking. Then I pulled every plug to make sure it had spark all the way across, they're all good. There was a strong fuel smell coming from #3 so I assumed that cylinder was flooded. So I cranked with plugs out for a while, then noticed that I have poor compression in that cylinder when I put my hand over it, it doesnt push as much air as 1, 2, and 4. Although I don't believe this is why it won't start because I'm pretty sure it was already running like that before, which is probably what was causing the tick/misfire. So that aside I still can't figure out what the hell is going on. Put it all back and tried cranking and still getting the occasional stutter like it wants to start but still just won't got. Please help me lol my daily driver is starting to become my daily dissapointment
