Exhaust connection problem

I have a 98 civic ex and too make a long story short the bolts connecting my header pipes to the front cat were removed for a job but there was only one put it back on and O2 sensor kicked mpg went down drastically and it was loud due to the seal not being tight so i got some exhaust hardware today came with springs but they wouldnt fit in between the connectors so my question is it just 2 bolts that go here or am i missing something? Very begginer with anything mechanical so this might be a dumb question.

Re: Exhaust connection problem

Spring goes between the nut and the flange, do you have a gasket in there?

Re: Exhaust connection problem

i usually smear a little permatex ultra copper rtv on those joints. you can leak test them by sticking a shop vac on the exhaust tip and puffing around with a cigar (:

Like this:
The springs go on the left side of the flange, allowing the joint to flex
