WARNING - do not ignore suspension problem! ball joint and CV axle collapsed!

I didn't realize the warning signs. I was previously told by a mechanic that if I heard clicking, I should have something like this checked out, but there was no clicking. What there was, was that when I'd turn a corner, it would pull in the direction of the turn for about 100 feet, then stop doing it. This was going on for maybe 10 days.

Then, we were pulling out of a parking spot on Broadway - the 5 lane main downtown street in Denver, last week and suddenly PLOMP!

I took this photo while we waited for the tow truck. Passenger side ball joint and CV axle broke and collapsed! It cost us almost $500 this past week, to get it running again, and we got the car back yesterday and noticed today that the front passenger door is catching on the panel in front of it, because that panel was apparently pushed back and bent when this happened! And when the car hits a decent bump, it sounds like the tire is scraping something on that side now!

Add this to the $2500 transmission rebuild that we just had to do on the 2002 Civic and we're hurting, folks. And we're still not out of the woods on this one. How much more will getting this repaired cost us?!

And THANK GOODNESS it didn't happen at 55 on the highway!

These cars are financially destroying us.

Re: WARNING! 2000 Civic ball joint and CV axle collapsed!

Looks like severe neglect to me.

Someone should have noticed problems long ago and had it taken care of--- before it became dangerous.

We just bought the car in late summer and had a GOOD mechanic check it out and he didn't see that this could happen.

I didn't come here to be insulted. I know this mechanic and he's great, so this happened after he looked at it. That pulling only started about 10 days before it failed. I thought it might have gone out of alignment or something, and that I had time. Apparently not.

I fail to see why you are insulted?
Statement of facts - it should have been looked, as you yourself stated right off the bat?

PS: "Warning" portion from your title is inaccurate

Re: WARNING - do not ignore suspension problem! ball joint and CV axle collapsed!

Sooo.. ever since I read this post it's been bugging me. I'm starting to get some clicking noises (and some of the steering symptoms described... but I've got winters on right now...checked inflation the other day too) on the front end of my car but just randomly... nothing I can reproduce. I went out today and jacked up the car, put it on stands, put a pry bar under the each front wheel and watched the lower *****... no movement... no noise. Raised it up and down on the jack a couple times and still no movement... no noise. While it was up on stands push/pulled the wheel at 9-3 and 12-6 and no play...no unusual tire wear.. so I'm kind of stumped at this point. The only thing I can think of is CV axle starting to fail.

thoughts?

Maybe try to record audio so we can hear it?

On the suspension, yes, I guess CV joints.
If frequency is higher, though, on my case were the synchros. A few teeth broken too.
