YOUR opinion on MY electrical issue!
I have a 99 civic. It is my daily driver that I drive to work 100 miles a day. I've had it about 9 months. Last night on the way home from work, about half way home it just quit. It would crank but not start. With no tools or anything, I called my wife and she came got me I went back with trailer. I was hoping it was something with ignition that after it cooled it would start. no bones. Got the car home and charged battery overnight. (left flashers going for about 6 hours). Started trouble shooting. I found the fuse for the fuel pump was blown. The diagram I have shows it should be a 15amp fuse. the blown fuse was a 5 amp. I'm the kind of guy that needs to know why the fuse blew. After all the 5 amp fuse worked for at least 9 months, and fuses do not just give up. My thinking... the dash lights have been getting brighter then going dim for as long as I have had the car. Since it's a beater with a heater, if it goes I drive it.. Do you think the alternator could have failed and put extra amperage into the system causing the already underrated fuse to fail????
Re: YOUR opinion on MY electrical issue!
Thanks. I replaced the alternator. It was daylight when I finished so I'm not sure if it fixed the dash light issue. The engine is noticeably quieter. I'm sure that the alternator at the very least had a bearing going out. That was a bigger job than it sounds like! Took about 3 hours. (not a pro) The old alternator said Honda on it so I am assuming it was the original. 250k miles??
