Help in stuck in Yellowknife!

I just replaced the ignition switch and the car was starting fine so I removed the battery terminals and went to work on my fan motor, now when I go to start my car the lights are really dim and won't start, but if I jump my car it starts fine, but if I go to start my car regularly it clicks and looses all power? I checked my battery it is reading 13 volts and I checked my alt it's. Reading like 17 any ideas guys?

Bad connections.
Between the battery posts and cable ends, or between cable ends and wires.
Or a bad/dead battery.
Check voltage with a load on it, not open/unloaded as before.

You have a voltmeter, learn how to use it. The answer is in front of you.
Move the test leads around, measure for voltage drops.

Re: Help in stuck in Yellowknife!

It will start with jumper cables attached to (I assume) the battery cables.
If battery connections are perfect, then it has to be a battery problem.

Either it is bad or just dead.
Charge and retest.

Stick your battery in a good car. Will it start it?

Re: Help in stuck in Yellowknife!

I only have my civic and a f450 so can't swap the battery over, any chance it could be the ignition switch/module that I swapped out earlyer today?

Re: Help in stuck in Yellowknife!

No. Not if it jump starts fine.

The jumper cables are taking place of a bad/weak/missing battery.

Either it is bad or just dead.
Charge and retest.
Replace if necessary.

Measure battery voltage while trying to operate the starter.
Or take the battery out and get it tested with a real load tester.

Ummmmm you may want to check your meter too.
You shouldn't have 17V when the car is running.
14.6V is about the upper limit for the charging system.
