Hey guys. Maybe someone knows whats going on. I have a 2000 civic si. Bone stock. Ok fine i have a k&n air filter (not a cone) Fairly New clutch. I idle at about 900 rpm.
I took it for smog (twice) and he said it kicks him out of system for the 25mph speed test. He said rpms are at 3500 rpm or so (in 2nd gear). Said everything passed but cant even complete the test. no mechanic really wants to diagnose it. Im stuck. Any ideas out there?
Any wisdom is appreciated!

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

1) Can 3rd gear be used? Probably not.
2) Is the smog test using dyno rollers, and its own speedometer, or is it using the cars speedometer? I bet a dyno.
3) Original transmission, I assume? No altered gear ratios?
4) Are the tires shorter than original? Put stock size tires back on it (at least on the front) for the smog test. Or at least tires that match the original tire diameter.
I'm betting on #4.

Thx for your response. Haha no cant use 3rd gear (legally). The tires are same diameter.

Hmm Im thinking if its an air leak or clutch adjustment issue. They seem normal though. Whats best way to check those things?

Re: 2000 si civic: High rpm at 2nd gear but normal idle? Smog issue
So...WHY does the system kick it out during the 25MPH test?
What is the exact reason?
Note: We don't do emissions checks where I live!
If the test specifies 25MPH in second gear, then it shouldn't be an RPM issue, unless the variables (tire size, gear ratios) are different from stock.
Note: 25 seems high for a 2nd gear test, I thought it would be a 15MPH check in 2nd.
You cannot change what the RPM is at a given road speed in a certain gear, it is strictly a function of gear ratios.....Is the car info wrong in the smog database?

From what i understand the rpms are too high at 25mph. Is 3500 rpms in 2nd gear at that speed normal?
