97 civic EX shuddering on cold take off
97 civic EX shuddering on cold take off
Hi,
I have a 97 civic EX that I bought recently with 191K miles (I know, a lot of miles to buy a car but it was cheap).
Anyway, I have noticed that it often has issues with taking off in first gear the first time of the day. I can give it a lot of gas and ride the clutch which seems to help, but it still will shudder into gear for a few violent jerks as it tries to go into gear. Occasionally I will feel a bit of the shudder when also shifting into second, but not as bad as first.
A couple starts down the road, and it goes away. Drives smooth the rest of day, no problem in other gears. Next day rolls around, almost always identical issue on first few take-offs of the day.
Any ideas on whether this could be a clutch issue or transmission issue or how to test? Let's assume that I know how to drive a manual and that isn't the issue.

That certainly sounds like a possibility, and I was wondering if anyone else had had this issue. I will probably just keep driving it for now until it gets unbearable and then it will be time to fix it.
